John's Story
This was the obituary we sent to the Inyo Register:
John Curtis Gosney, 68, passed away on December 7 in West Covina, California. He was born on April 9, 1952 in Burbank, California to Frank E. and Bernice Gosney. After his family, which consisted of his wife Debi, his children and grandchildren, Johnny’s next great love was fishing. Our family’s ties to the area go back a long way, as our grandfather worked in Independence and Lone Pine in the early 30s. This is when our father learned of the wonder of the Owens Valley, where he returned to time and time again and took us with him.
As we grew, we would come back as often as we could – work does interfere with good times, unfortunately. We were creek and river fishermen mostly, and soon could tell you ever nock and cranny. Johnny could catch fish when the others around him were coming up empty ha...Expand for more
nded, luckily enough; and just enough for a daily limit, which we would take home and cook and eat. Nothing was ever wasted. We respected the resources that were available and considered it a gift.
There was many a spot on the Owens River that only Johnny knew, pushing his way though the brush if need be. Oftentimes he would come back to the fish cleaning facilities with some nice and heavy Rainbows. Many times, we would be staying at Highlands RV, where our parents kept a trailer for many years. Now, cleaning fish invariably gathers a crowd. Of course, he would be asked where he got the fish. And with a steady voice and a look right in the eye of the asker, he would calmly reply, “Intake Two.”
My brother was a good guy. I will sorely miss my fishing buddy, but I know that if there is a pond of water in Heaven, he is pulling out some big ones.
