Life
How to sum up the last 40 years in a few sentences? I offer these random thoughts as a mosaic:
Graduated Palomar College and UCSD, went backpacking across Europe in between and after. A part-time student job at UCSD evolved into a management career in the building controls industry for almost 18 years. Traveled the USA and Canada managing large system installations. Have stayed put in San Diego. After sowing my wild oats during the roaring 20's, settled down in my early 30's and have been happily married for over 15 years to my wife Karen. After weighing the pros and cons, decided we would rather rent children than own them, so now enjoy spoiling our nieces and nephews (much to the chagrin of our siblings). Bought an ultralight aircraft in the early '80s. Highlight was buzzing my boss's house then landing on El Camino Real east of Del Mar. Took up scuba diving in early '90s, traveled the Caribbean in search of the perfect reef (found several). Dove the Blue Hole off Belize, swam with dolphins in Honduras, sharks in the Caymans. Bought a timeshare in Kauai, return every year when we feel "continent fever" starting to come on. We are die-hard Chargers and Padres fans, through thin and thin. working. Put a band together while Director of Training & Employee Development at Stellcom, a professional engineering services firm in San Diego (as it turns out, a fair percentage of engineers are also musicians). Played the company holiday party in December 2000. Laid off in 2001 during the "Dot Com Bust", founded the non-profit Layoff Lounge in San Diego to assist people who were out of work. Helped start up a technology company, died for lack of funding. Rebounded, worked at Cubic Transportation Systems for 3 years as a Training Specialist, along with several former Stellcom-ites. After yet another layoff in 2006, lost no time in getting my next gig as a consultant on a BearingPoint, Inc. project at the County of San Diego. Left voluntarily in Sept 2007 for a great job at Sempra Global in San Diego as Project Manager, Training & Education. Have visited western Europe six times since 2005, exploring Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Holland, and Belgium. Enjoy organizing events with friends and family, especially reunions. Have lived by the motto: "life is short, so don't waste time and energy on trivial things or worrying about the past", which has served me well.
P.S. About the photo: that's me and friend Amy at Oktoberfest 2006 in Munich; wife Karen took the picture.
