John's Story

Life Much has changed for me, even in the past few years - currently I'm completing a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree, majoring in Sociology and minoring in Anthropology - I'm preparing for law school, but the possibility of just finishing off a combined degree in education is a possibility I'm still considering. If being a lawyer manifests itself in the near future, I hope to practice certain areas of civil litigation and immigration law, with the ultimate goal of serving individuals of a lower income, who otherwise could not afford standard legal services (I'm a bit of a social democrat!)Since high school I have attained a diploma in parallegal studies, and I've worked within various facets of the provincial and municipal (Edmonton & Calgary) government with such departments as Alberta Justice and Disaster Social Services. Prior to that, I worked within various retail management positions, until I came to my own conception of what I really wanted to invest my schooling in - alas, I am finally studying something that truly interests me. I really enjoy my studies in Sociology and I greatly enjoy my work on the side of managing the local college's 'Safe Walk' program . I believe that regardless of whether the fields I work and study in rack in a lot of material wealth, I've come to the point in my life where I believe that the work one does should make that person genuinely happy, so helping people in the capacities that I do, makes me genuinely ...Expand for more
happy. I should also mention that since having attended and graduated from Bishop McNally High School, I have come to terms with my sexual orientation, and I've been out as a gay male for over a decade now! It's taken awhile, but for the first time in my 27 years of life I can honestly say that I truly feel comfortable in my own skin. I enjoy looking at the learning value of all my experiences and revel in new and exciting ways of looking at different things, and more importantly, I like to view life as one big "lesson" and its problems as learning experiences that make a person the best person they can be for themself. In this respect, I have learned many important "lessons", and many times have had to learn things the "hard way", but I truly believe that all the lessons I've learned have created the individual who I am and continually strive to be. Most recently, I learned the value of having certain family in my life, especially family who foster all aspects of the individual whom I am (including being gay - this caused a little bit of a crisis within my immediate family when I came out at eighteen). I've noticed from personal account how easy it is to push family away (especially during the earlier years of "coming out") but have realized the importance of keeping individuals around who have witnessed my "growth" from such an intimate vantage point, all the more closer. I know I am blessed to have such important people in my life.
