John's Story
After finishing up at BCC, went to college at the University of Chicago. During graduate school, worked at the National Security Agency in communications and encryption technologies, and was then recruited to a start up company called Thinking Machines in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Worked there on artificial intelligence applications and fine-grained parallel computers, designing the Connection Machine with Danny Hillis and Brewster Kahle. Then joined the US 5th Generation Project in the artificial intelligence and natural language group, working under Doug Lenat. the imaging and medical applications specialist, then co-founded another company called Stentor as the CTO, specializing in PACS and medical informatics. We were bought by Philips, where I was a Senior Fellow in the medical division, and global architect for the integrated informatics platform efforts. Finally got tired of working in a big company, and am now starting another company with some friends working on distributed healthcare applications. My partner Todd and I have a 10-acre farm outside of Portland, Oregon, where we now live with our two westies, Buzzy and Lima Bean. We grow around 50 varieties of heirloom apples and a bunch of unusual flowers and vegetables. Lots of other hobbies, interests and projects, so just ask!
