John's Story
I grew up in West Covina and moved to Azusa with my parents, older brother, Brian, and youngest brother, Robert, in or around 1972. I attended St. Francis of Rome elementary school from grade 5-8 - where I served as an altar boy - and Azusa High School in Azusa Calif. from 1976-1980. During my high school years, I worked on the Aztec Sun school newspaper and - perhaps more notably - its underground counterpart, the Aztec Moon. I never played any varsity sports but covered many an Aztec football game, both as a reporter in high school and later as a play-by-play announcer for the local cable network. I worked as a stringer (part-time writer) for the Azusa Herald weekly newspaper througyh my senior year, then moved on to the Pasadena Star News and its bi-weekly affiliates, the Temple City Times, Monrovia News Post, the Duartean and Arcadia Tribune while attending Citrus College in the early 1980s. I eventually landed a full-time position with Highlander Publications, working for its weekly affiliates i...Expand for more
n Azusa, Rancho Cucamonga, and Upland through the mid-1980s. During the late 1980s and early 1990s I sang and played bass in a Catholic rock band, Herose. I also wrote for the La Canada Valley Sun Newspaper for five years before moving to Nebraska in 2003. I've been writing for a daily newspaper here for going on five years. I'm married and have a 19-year-old daughter from a previous marriage who resides in Toronto, Canada. A vocalist of sorts, I've sung solos on cable TV, in Christmas productions in Orange County, Calif. in two church choirs. I've also sung in weddings, funerals, and other special occasions. I even won a handful of karaoke contests at the local bowling alley in Duarte.
If money were no object, I would build a recording studio and record a heavy metal album and a Christmas album, in that order. I'd also like to write a few books if opportunity and inspiration present themselves. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it! Look forward to reading yours and catching up through the years!
