John's Story

Hey! Find me on facebook...I don't visit this space much! Cheers - John Life Happily married with 3 kids, and comfortably stashed on the west side of Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. I met Monica while attending Lawrence University, and we were married in 1987 after attending graduate school and beginning our careers. Alex is our oldest, a sweet, brilliant, quiet boy with a voracious appetite for reading, video games and soccer. Hannah is a hard charger with lofty goals, very adept in the world of adults, quick to pick up on social cues. Invaluable resource for her older brother, in other words. Willie is a wonderfully sensitive child, happy to sit in silence for long periods, but given to startlingly profound words after sitting around seemingly doing nothing. Not to be counted out is Edgar, our one luxury. An Entlebucher (look it up!) with beautiful coloring, he's a faithful watchdog and incessant playboy, a full member of the family. Life is filled with sports, either biking or sailing or skiing, or attending kid's events at school. I've accomplished more and been happier than I ever would have thought possible in high school! School Ms. Westby was the most inspirational teacher I had in high school, college, or graduate school. She left you with no alternative but to do your best. We all tried a lot of alternatives! I seriously don't think I would be able to write cogently today without her insistence on high standards. High school isn't something that most would wish to do over again, and I certainly wouldn't ever trade in the self-confidence, sense of humor, caring for others, drive, and vision I have today. Nonetheless, I do have some great memories.... ...too, too many to mention. Hanging with the boys is indeed something I have missed ever since. Its got its counterparts today, but nothing to match good friends and endless free time, plus shared experience. Highlights, a brief list: * Libertus straddling the median with his car on Calhoun Parkway. Oops. * Doug Phelps through the back of a garage. Oops. * Spinning out the Hastings sedan in the rain. Oops. * Parties, and music, and dancing. Still miss it. * Pulling the Haste's keys out of the ignition and throwing them out the window while stopped at a stop light. I still laugh at that one. William never did. * Spinning out in the Hastings sedan again on a country road. Oops. * Playing tag on...Expand for more
the roof of Phelp's house. Dumb. Really, really fun. * At the Phelp's with the P's on vacation. God, I think I'm going to die if they don't get back soon.... * Pizza delivered to my house by four females. Anonymously, with yours truly paying the bill. I have names, I do not forget. * Liz Streitz: Behrendt's testing, and "Socrates was a man" - you got actual test points for that! Can you believe that? Have you no sense of pride, woman? * Biking to Milwaukee and back with Jim Farrell. We must have shown some initiative occasionally! * Jerry Schlaefer hanging Chris Tack over the stairwell from the 4th floor by his feet. Smart is not the word. * Ski trips. Very, very fun. Tooleyridin', anyone? Chris Tack jumping OVER a group of strangers standing next to a jump on Lazy M. Through the bumps in the trees at Red Lodge - Todd Smith, Me, Doug, William, Irve, Dave Kellam...if the top one wipes out, the rest go too, because you only gain speed when falling on a 45 degree slope... * Graduation party - the real one (thanks, Nancy). Sleeping it off in a hay loft, and waking to the sight of Phil dunking doughnuts in beer. Ah, the good life. Finishing up with a lazy afternoon in the Bailey's pool. Thanks, Janet. * Diana's house after an impressive TP job. One of those still shots that just stuck in my mind ever since. It just looked so right....like a Currier & Ives Winter scene...TP hanging from every branch of every tree... * Hasty Jam. Cooperation and tolerance from Pa Haste, God bless him. Cooking pancakes for 75 with D. Where's Bill Jones? * Track. Hard work, but worth it - for the comeraderie, and the sense of accomplishment. * Endless hang time on the D-man's front porch. Without compare. College Attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where I met my wife Monica. Graduated in 1983 with a degree in Physics. Attended graduate school in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Master's in ME in 1988. Workplace I've worked at Seagate Technology, manufacturer of computer disk drives, since the Fall of 1990, holding various positions in engineering and management. Its a wonderful place, with bright people from all over the world working together on developing fascinating technology. I travel frequently to the Far East, which provides the opportunity to work in and become familiar with cultures very different from our own.
