Sheriff Kanalakis entered the United States Air Force in 1970 as a commissioned officer, served as Squadron Commander at Chanute AFB Ill., served in the Tactical Air Command and Strategic Air Command, performed duties as Missile Combat Crew Commander and Instructor, at Davis Monthan AFB, AZ, 1973 to 1976, earned the 15th Air Force Combat Crew Member Excellence Award. Following six years of dedicated service, he was honorably discharged in 1976 at the rank of Captain, and
Sheriff Mike Kanalakis was sworn in as Sheriff’s Deputy on January 3rd, 1977, served under four Monterey County Sheriffs: Jack Davenport, D.B “Bud” Cook, Norm Hicks, and Gordon Sonne, was promoted to and performing exceptionally in the duties and functions of Deputy Sheriff, Field Training Officer (1979), Sergeant (1981), Lieutenant (1996), Commander (2001), and Undersheriff in 2002.

Sheriff Kanalakis was selected to serve as interim Chief of Police for the City of Greenfield in 2000. He subsequently received the Monterey County Employee of the year award and was inducted into the National Police Hall of Fame in 2003, and
Sheriff Kanalakis was elected to Sheriff in 2002 serving two terms from January, 2003 to December, 2010. He was awarded commendations from Gov. Schwarzenegger, Senator Able Maldonado, Senator Jeff Denham, Assemblywoman Anna Caballero, U.S. Representative Sam Farr, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the California Attorney General’s Office; and
Sheriff Kanalakis was instrumental in helping create the Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force, the Monterey County Bomb Squad, the Agricultural Crimes Unit, the Central Coast Ag Crimes Task Force, the South Bay Regional Training Consortium Alliance with the Monterey Peninsula College Public Safety Training Academy, brought new technology to the Sheriff’s Office, helped establish a county wide violent crime and narcotic task force, established the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Team, and
Sheriff Kanalakis, throughout his distinguished career, has contributed countless hours in support of different commissions, community groups and service organizations to include Chairman, Sheriff’s Advisory Council, Monterey County Child Death Review, and Monterey County Grant Approval Authority. Member of Monterey Chapter National Latino Peace Officers Association, Monterey County Chaplains Corp, Sheriff’s Aero Squadron, Sheriff’s Posse, Sheriffs Mounted Unit, American Legion Post 591, Carmel Host Lions Club, California Peace Officers Association, Monterey County Peace Officers Association, California Tactical Officers Association, Board of Directors California State Sheriffs Association, and others.
The Sheriff retired Dec. 30, 2010 to travel and resume a teaching career.".
