John's Story
College
I attended Bowling Green State University (OH) and was a music education major for one semester until I found out I had to take voice class (yuk). I ended up getting to sing a lot in Phi Mu Alpha (a national professional music fraternity, and truly the only group I believe that would allow me to sing in public :) I switched to music performance the following semester with an emphasis on woodwinds. It was pretty crazy some semesters, having 3 lessons a week, one each on clarinet, saxophone, and flute, but I truly believe I'm better for it. After BG, I attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music on a full scholarship (hey, you can't turn down a free lun...Expand for more
ch :) to get my master's degree in clarinet performance. CCM was a truly eye-opening experience, and the instruction I received there was first-rate.
Workplace
The second year of my master's degree, I was lucky enough to win an audition for the Dayton Philharmonic and now serve as their principal clarinetist. The orchestra is really on an upswing, with a brand new world class concert hall, the Shuster Performing Arts Center. I love my job and honestly can't imagine doing anything else. Teaching is also extremely important to me. I am the adjunct professor of clarinet at the University of Dayton and maintain a private studio of about 20 clarinet students in Cincinnati where I live.
