John's Story
Life
After living in San Francisco for 8 years and Seattle for 14 years, I am now back in Southern California.
I was the very happy owner of a small resort property in Big Bear but the economy hit us hard up there so as of 2009 I am back in Oxnard (near the beach) working at my old job for a direct mail company.
I have not kept in touch with many of my classmates but would welcome hearing from any of you who may remember me (fondly or not!). I'd even be interested in attending the next reunion. I haven't been to any of the previous reunions, but there is always a first time for everything.
My favorite teacher was Miss Jaffe who taught English. I have a funny story about her that I don't want to post here but if you wish to hear it, just drop me a line.
I have never been 'married' nor had children. I came out of the closet as a gay man in 1980, and while it is now common for gay men and women to be parents, it wasn't so for my/our generation. I have had two long term partners, one of whom died in 1988. I am currently single but happy.
My interests include politics (I'll keep from sharing my opinions here but if anyone cares to know, drop me a line), cars (I've owned a b...Expand for more
unch of 'em), motorcycles (I've owned a few of 'em), music (I always try to stay current but also love country music, 60's, 70's and 80's stuff as well. My favorite groups from my youth are Steely Dan and Chicago - I still listen to Steely Dan all the time), travel (mostly to Maui, I try to go every year although it doesn't quite work out that way), and just spending time with friends.
My career path has been varying. I've been a deputy sheriff, a car salesman, a lighting designer, a legal assistant, a creative writer, and a disc jockey among other things. I've owned three businesses - lighting design and installation, espresso stands in Seattle and the Big Bear resort.
I am in good health. I battled Hodgkins Disease (cancer of the lymphatic system) successfully and have been in remission for almost 25 years now. Most of the hair on the top of my head is gone, and what's left is mostly gray but at least I haven't resorted to growing a pony tail. In fact, I've worn my hair in a 'buzz cut' since about 1979 so the receding hairline doesn't stand out much.
Well, that's about it. As I said, I would welcome hearing from any of you who remember me. Take care and be well, all!
