John's Story
School
In high school I was something of a misfit. I have some fond memories but, overall, high school was a way to pass time until my 18th birthday. I was fortunate to meet some great people, mainly through the theater. I have lost touch with nearly everyone I knew then. I moved across the country not long after graduating which made keeping in touch a challenge.
College
I never managed to finish college. I thoroughly enjoyed college and (unlike high school) got excellent grades but something always seems to interfere. I have been supporting myself since I was 17 and life gets in the way. I would like to finish college and may go back some day. For now I'm doing okay and having too much fun.
Workplace
I have been employed in the travel technology business since 1975. I spent five years running the IT department of a Los Angeles travel agency before moving to Florida to work in the IT division of a major airline. We moved ...Expand for more
to North Texas in 1983 (where I still live). The airline spun us off in the mid-90Âs but I still work for the same company.
I am a computer systems architect and I specialize in Internet technologies such as XML and Web services. Yes, I am a nerd. I love the work, enjoy getting to explore new and emerging technologies, and I am fortunate to work with many brilliant people. If you have to work for a living, it's great to get to do something you enjoy.
Working in the Travel Industry has its advantages. On business or personal trips I have been able to visit many of the great cities of the world. I have spoken at a technical conference in Versailles, sailed down the Nile to Luxor, and practiced Tai Chi in a Hong Kong park. My 'day job' is a lot of work but there are plenty of benefits.
I note with chagrin that over the last 35 years I have been without a full time job for exactly four months. Am I looking forward to retiring!
