John's Story

Life I am currently the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Harry Truman VA Hospital where I have practiced since 2002. I worked as clinical faculty at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Cardiothoracic Surgery (except for about 2 years) from 2003 through 2018 (I was appointed Interim Chair for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at MU - MIZZOU - in October of 2007 where I served as Division Chief until July 2009. I left MU due to problems I had with leadership. I live in the same city as both institutions, Columbia, Missouri. I have worked part time at the third hospital in our city, helping the hart surgeons there with weekend call. After graduating from UCLA as a double major in Physics and Biology in 1986, I did cancer research for two years through the Sepulveda VA and UCLA. This research focused on urinary antigens in Sarcoma and mechanisms of photochemosensitization of human tumor cells in vitro. I lived in Ventura and commuted during most of my post undergrad research. Almost on a whim, I applied for and was accepted to medical school at The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I spent the next 11 years in Milwaukee, where I completed medical school and my general surgery residency (squeezing in a two year research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery). Kathleen and I met in Milwaukee during my General Surgery residency. I moved back to Torrance in 1999 for my 3 year cardiothoracic residency at LAC+USC. I joined the Army Reserves in 1993 and became Active Duty in 2002 after completing my cardiothoracic surgery training. I was Active Duty Army from July 5, 2002 through July 4, 2012 (I was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Medical Corps when I left acti...Expand for more
ve duty service). I returned from an 8 1/2 month tour in Iraq from January through September 2004. I served under OIF 2 (Operation Iraqi Freedom) at the 31st Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad which was the only Level III trauma facility in theater. There I functioned as the Chief of Thoracic Surgery and head of triage for Mass Casualties. I deployed a second time to the 47th Combat Support Hospital in Mosul, Iraq in support of OIF 09-11 (Aug 09 - Feb 2010) as the Chief of Surgery. I was assigned to the Truman VA hospital here in Columbia during my entire army career with my command element being the general Leonard Wood Hospital MEDDAC at Ft. Leonard Wood near Waynesville, MO.. I am Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery. My main areas of interest include surgery for the thoracic aorta, acquired heart disease (especially complex aortic valve and aortic root), vascular surgery, minimally invasive approaches including coronary bypass without the heart lung machine, TAVR, mitralclip (structural heart team) and thoracic trauma. Kathleen and I married in July 1995 and I have three children: Joe (July 1991), Laura (October 1992) and Nicole (June 1996)...a yours, mine and ours situation. My main interests outside of medicine (an all time consuming endeavor) include music, high end audio and home theater, computers and Internet, food, fine dining, wine tasting and hiking, exercise and fitness, after-market automotive modification and long range target shooting (just to name a few). Although I am connected through Facebook with many of my classmates, I maintain a close and long lasting friendship with Carla Schubert (formerly Rojo). I can be found on the CTSNet website for reference.
