John's Story

These days I still spend inordinate amounts of time watching Korean dramas on dramafever com. Thank goodness for the subtitles (even tho they say "bear the grunt" when the characters are saying "bear the brunt" lol ). But i am really only about halfway fluent in Korean. My head is filled with the constant repetition of, "Mahn-guk Hahmnidah, Mah-mah" which is basically someone saying thank you to the king. I keep dreaming that someday, I'll be more fluent in Korean, but that sort of wish might not be so realistic. The best part of speaking Korean is that I get the chance to meet online with many of the worlds most gorgeous women. I am always quite open about how I look and I let them see me on my webcam as well just so they know that I am a very ugly and very old looking specimen of the human race, who just happens to speak their language. What is really nice about Koreans and most other Asians that I meet online, is that their society teaches them a respect for age that just has no comparison in our culture here. As I was growing up we learned the anti Asian racist attitudes of our parents, but in school we were taught that Asians have a respect for age. And yet that always gave me the impression that the elders were quiet and boring and that the c...Expand for more
hildren were to be seen and not heard etc. However, in fact, my experience of the respect that young people show to people of our age is the kind of respect we all want in our most cherished and intimate family lives with lots of playful interaction between everyone of all ages in the family. And what I find with my online friends in Asia - even when they are outside of their family environment, is that they carry this respect for elders everywhere because everyone practices it. And the result of this, for me, is that I often feel a strong bond of love with these online friends even though I and they know that we will never meet each other. This doesn't happen with my online friends in American chat rooms, and it doesn't even happen with my friends in Asian- American chat rooms with lots of Asians, particularly in California but also in other states. I think it is because Asians tend to lose that respect for elders, probably gradually, while they get assimilated into the American society. They lose the respect towards external relationships altho they definitely keep the respect for elders in their own families. Meanwhile, in my body, the pacemaker continues to work its magic and now I can tell Lee Majors to move over because I am certainly a bionic man...
