John's Story

Life Where to start? After graduation I did the college thing without truely knowing what I really wanted to do, so I finished one year while totally slacking and went out into the world and worked. After leaving job after job realizing that I would not be able to support myself without going to college, I went on a soul search to find that perfect career for myself. It ends up that I wanted to become a firefighter and I started to make that happen by going to Chemeketa Community College in Salem and became a resident volunteer firefighter at Polk County Fire District in Monmouth. (I was 23 at the time.) After a 2 year stint there, my Pop (Stepfather) ended up getting a head injury and I moved back to Eugene to be closer to my parents and my girlfriend at the time. I moved in with my girlfriend and unhappily stayed for another 3 years with her until I decided that I was tired of the abuse, meanwhile working at Jerrys home improvement. In 1995 I got married to a nice woman with 2 children and did the dad thing, all the while volunteering as a firefighter and keeping my dream alive. One of the boys (Jacob) was two years old and I adopted him. I loved being a dad and worked at Jerrys and then Oregon Medical laboratories until 1998 when my wife encouraged me to go back to school and get my Paramedic. I went back to Chemeketa, got my paramedic and finally got hired as a firefighter/paramedic at Bend Fire Department... Unfortunately two bad things were happening. First, I was the oldest guy in my recruit class and I let myself go physically and just wasn't a good fit with their department. I ended up leaving after about 4 months disheartened and feeling like a failure. I really began to wonder whethe...Expand for more
r I had what it took to be a paramedic. The second bad thing was that my wife and I were not communicating any more and our marriage was comming to an end. I got hired in the Portland area as a paramedic at MetroWest ambulance company and got separated from my wife and then divorced peacefully in September of 2001. (A tragic year for myself and the country!) My ex is still a good friend and we still work together to make sure that our son never feels uncomfortable and knows that he is loved by both of us. An opportunity came to me in February of 2002, the Chief at the fire district that I volunteered at called me to tell me that his department was starting an ambulance service and needed qualified paramedic/firefighters to work there. I tested, and got hired there and have been at Lane Rural ever since. It has been a wonderful place to work and for once I worked somewhere where everyone is like a member of my family. (However disfunctional it may be at times! :) In October of 2003, I was set up on a date with a woman by my friend Scott. I met her and we hit it off wonderfully. She has 2 children from a previous marriage and they are great. Justin is 13 years old and hornery as ever, but lovable. Jessica is sweet and very much a girl, which I must admit has been a challenge to me at times because I can actually reason with her. (Making me come to the conclusion that parenting girls is very different than boys.) My mom is exstatic that she finally has a grandaughter (even if she is a step) to buy clothes for! I married Debbie in July of 2003 and have been building something special with her ever since. No children with Deb other than a cute, sweet natured, but neurotic lab/rot/husky mix named Mickey.
