John's Story
Life
Well here's a quick summary of where I've been all these years.
Been living and working in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands for almost 10 years now. Previously I had been in Atlanta (over 10 years) after graduating from East Carolina University's Art School in 1985. I've worked as a graphic designer most of my career, from print production, advertising agencies, in-house corporate, and presently in the marketing department of an (Irish owned) telecommunications company.
Life in the Cayman Islands has treated me very good, with the exception of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The 40 unit condo complex I was living at was totally destroyed. No buildings, just the foundations remained. The day after, my only possessions were the clothes on my back. It's true! A T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, but I was happy...Expand for more
to be alive. Material things can ALWAYS be replaced.. except for maybe a few sentimental items such as photographs, but that's the risk you take by living less than 100 feet from the ocean (plus 20 to 30 foot waves and 150 mph winds to contend with). Eventually most of the items needed to be replaced anyways. You know with styles, fashion and technology changing so rapidly these days...
The big news was I finally got married in May of 2005. Yes, believe it or not, my first time "to the altar"! My wife, Ibis, is Cuban. I wished I had taken my Spanish classes more seriously. (That would have been Ms. Franke at Douglas MacArthur Jr. High, Ft Meade, MD).
Eventually I will return to the US. I do miss the States and especially the opportunity to see my parents in Fayetteville / Ft Bragg, NC more often.
