John's Story

Happy Holidays to our family and friends! Wow, 2008 went by so quickly. Actually, this whole decade is racing by. It doesn¿t seem that long ago that we were all concerned about Y2K! Here¿s a brief update on happenings at the Modrowsky house: The boys turned five in 2008. Our family had two fabulous vacations this year thanks to amazing people in our lives. We stayed for a week at the NJ shore in Ocean City during September. Both boys so enjoy it there ¿ and it is always such a relaxing and happy time. Also, thanks to Make a Wish, our family spent five wonderful days during November at Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World in Orlando, Florida. It was an incredible experience for Alex ¿ and all of us! During our time there, we stayed at Give Kids the World. Words cannot express what an incredible facility it is and how caring all the people were to us. Andrew¿s curiosity is simply insatiable ¿ it is so much fun watching him figure things out. He also loves his family and is very social at school. Andrew¿s favorite activities include the computer, television, and arts and crafts. Through the year, Andrew¿s main interests remain: ¿ Dinosaurs ¿ he likes to tell you everything he knows about a specific dinosaur. He had a special outing to NYC when daddy took him to see Walking with Dinosaurs show at Madison Square Garden. He also loved the train ride! For Halloween, he got his mom to make a custom costume ¿ an ornithochirus, a kind of pterosaur. This occupied a lot of his mom¿s free time during October! Andrew says he wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up! ¿ Maps ¿ Andrew has a map almost all the time. He studies one while going to bed. He takes one to school for the bus ride. He knows every state and their individual capitals. He also knows where most of the countries are on a world map or globe. ¿ Languages ¿ Andrew loves languages/alphabets such as Chinese and Hebrew. He taught himself the Hebrew alphabet (with help from the Internet). Alex ¿ We are pleased with the cognitive advances Alex made during the year. We remain hopeful that he will one day talk. During our stay at the parks in Orlando, Alex so loved the bigger than life characters. He also enjoyed all the rides, especially the roller-coasters. We were also so happy with how well Alex traveled and stayed in strange surroundings. It was his first time in an airplane and we were concerned about that. On the way down to Florida, he quickly settled in and slept most of the way - just like an old traveling pro. Things could not have gone better. Alex¿s medical challenges continue to be tough on our whole family. He is still on the ketogenic diet but is far from seizure free. And every seizure that he experiences still tears at our hearts. In spite of that, our family has so much to be thankful for. Were it not for Alex¿s medical condition, we would not have met people who are selfless and genuinely caring at a time and in a society when these characteristics are just not fashionable. And Alex is everyone¿s favorite person to cuddle with! Kathy and John ¿This year, we found ourselves celebrating our tenth wedding anniversary! Wow. We managed to arrange a brief (all too!) stay (alone) in NYC for a couple of days. For a few moments, we got a chance to talk about something other than the kids and the household. Otherwise, things are pretty much the same as last year. We always enjoy getting together with friends and relatives. We wish ...Expand for more
we could do it more often ¿ sharing time with those you care about is more valuable than any other gift. Our family wishes you and your family the very best holiday season and a happy and healthy 2009. Merry Christmas, John, Kathy, Andrew and Alex --------------------------------- From 2006: Life Happy Holidays to all!! In some ways 2006 rushed by… and now we find ourselves in the midst of holiday preparation and me hurriedly writing this note. A lot’s been happening to the family… 1) Andrew… at times, he’s our 3 ½ year old going on 20. He already corrects Daddy when he needs to!! I can’t wait until he is teenager!! He’s grown so much in so many ways this year!! Andrew goes to pre-school each morning. It was scary (for Kathy and me) to see this tiny boy get on a huge school bus… but, he enjoys it. Andrew loves exploring ‘his’ world – especially via the computer and TV! Everything is a wonder to him – well, most things!! He loves flowers (during summer months, he always carried a flower from our yard to school), and to fantasize, read and be tickled. He goes nowhere without his rapidly disintegrating green ‘blanket’ – it especially provides comfort to him when he is scared… Andrew is very smart and it is fun to watch him figure things out. Last year, his favorite color was blue (and favorite item was any kind of star) – now, it’s all about pink… but, according to Andrew, tomorrow it will be green – but, he has been saying that for about 4 months now… 2) Alex… our Alex had a lot of challenges this year. We continue to treat his seizure disorder. Fortunately, we have been blessed with finding many caring health care workers, teachers and therapists who dedicate themselves to making a difference – and they have in our lives! Alex remains an incredibly sweet and happy little boy! He is a very rough and tumble kind of child (definitely, not from his father!!) who loves sensation, especially speed, being upside down, swinging, the wind, cold, rain, and snow!! He has a smile and laugh that will melt your heart! Like Andrew, Alex has begun pre-school. Each day as he arrives at school, there is a crowd of teachers’ assistants always eager to greet him and escort him to his classroom. Alex loves books and toys with lights and music!! He is on his third ‘Tad’ that goes to bed with him each night and provides him with sound and comfort while going to sleep and during the night. Alex also loves working on puzzles – and is very good with them!! 3) John … OK, this was a tough year for me. In July, I underwent open heart surgery to repair a leaky heart valve and a hole between two chambers. I now have one bionic part with a serial number in case it is ever recalled!! Not a really fun time! I apologize to everyone who sent me get well wishes after which, I of course, failed to send out thank you notes!! Please forgive me!! I am now completing cardio therapy and feel great!! At the job, I survived two rounds of layoffs… more to come! 4) Kathy… how she held the family together and juggle all the doctor’s appointments and maintain her own sanity is a wonder!! What an angel and advocate for us all she is! Kathy took a leave of absence from work to take care of everyone… she has just started back at her web designer job, but may leave at the end of January to focus on Alex. That’s a little snapshot of 2006 from the Modrowsky household! We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy 2007!! Love, John, Kathy, Andrew and Alex
