John's Story

Life At 36 years young, I'm still very much active in outdoor activities, especially with my children. I married when I was 29, have had 7 wonderful years of marriage (and counting), have four boys (latest birth was Feb 10, 2006). I spent 11 years serving our country in the USAF, and now work for Lockheed Martin, our nation's largest defense contractor, as a project manager overseeing a major USAF contract. I'm still going to school (life demands continual schooling!), and I've been on 6 continents and untold number of islands during my life traveling on the job and for pleasure. I've sailed the Indian Ocean for three weeks, and have racked up enough frequent flyer miles on more airlines than I can keep track of! I currently live in the Southwest, in Albuquerque, NM, and love it! If any of you are ever in the area, give me a shout and I'll show you the Land of Enchantment! School Let's see, I was the kid that you could easily forget about! My only intention in high school was to complete it and get out of town and get on with my life! I wasn't into the sports or after-school activities, but rather just did my best in the classroom and focused on where my life was heading towards after high school. In my junior year, I took the oath with the Air Force, and was put on the Delayed Enlistment program for nearly a year and a half, so I was just doing my best in school to ensure that I didn't have any issues with graduation so that I could leave home and go off into the wild blue yonder! Some of you may remember me as the "IROC-Z man," as I really loved the IROC-Z Camaro's that came out during our high school years, and I had vowed that I would own one. Well, I never owned one, but I did test drive one! I found out after the test drive that I was better off not owning one! Instead I bought a 1988 Ford Escort after I left high school and was in the Air Force, to which I happily owned for over 5 years! Anyway, about high school, I don't have much else to say about it, other than I enjoyed Mrs. Toms classes, and all of my math classes, drafting classes, and anything to do with science. I was the geek in school who you would never give a second look at! College Let's see, finished my undergraduate program at UOP, went on to then start my MBA with Colorado Christian University, and will complete my Masters in October of 2008. For those of you who ever receive the opportunity to make something out of your education and apply it the way you really intended it to be, take a look at CCU and hopefully it will fulfill your void the way it has mine. Workplace I started working for Lockheed Martin in September of 1999, just as my military career ended. I worked on a major satellite ground station program that had me up and running within a couple of days on the job writing test procedures and eventually baselining the entire systems as they were delivered to my group from the manufacturing group. By the end of my 3-years on the program, I was the Test Director of the program, and then an oppurtunity to mov...Expand for more
e back to Albuquerque, New Mexico for another job with Lockheed Martin was given to me. My wife and I jumped at the chance to return back "home" to where we had started out, and we threw our house up for sale on the market, and a couple of weeks later we closed on it, and watched the moving van leave with our household goods. We arrived back to Albuquerque in April of 2002, built our new house, and I started work with my old Air Force unit, only this time as the contractor. I worked at this job until just recently, when I was offered a project manager's position on a different contract here in Albuquerque that I took, as it meant no more extended travel and the position is unique to my career path development as a Program Manager, that I hope to attain within a few more years of schooling (Masters degree) and with the job experience. Otherwise, the last85-years with Lockheed Martin have been exceptional, as I've been promoted three times in five years! Military After Basic Training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas (which, by the way was right in the middle of the hottest part of the year-August), I went to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi for over 7-months of technical school in electronics. By the time I left Keesler in April of 1989, I was so crammed-full of school that I decided that I would take a break from education until I felt I was ready! Meanwhile I was stationed at Hill AFB, in Utah from 1989 to 1992, enjoying months on end of traveling around the world and working at my new career as a Satellite Communications Journeyman. Basically I deployed with tactical satellite communications equipment, set-up and operated/maintained them during realworld deployments. I continued doing this job through two more assignments over in Germany, and then in 1994 I came back to the U.S. in the fall to live in the Bay Area of California. I loved working and living right there in Sunnyvale, as San Francisco was just under an hour's drive north, and San Jose was just minutes away to the south. Now my job consisted of deploying around the world tracking rocket launches out of Cape Canaveral and Vandenburg AFB in California, and actually testing satellites inside their factories for compatibility with the Air Force's Satellite Control Network. I ended up seeing more of the world, and making essential contacts in a wholy different side of the satellite world that eventually landed me where I am today. However, I moved on to Kirtland AFB, in Albuquerque, New Mexico in early 1997, and continued with the job. Late in 1997, I met my wife, and we married two years later in 1999 on the beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at her parent's home. I left the Air Force in September of 1999 to start my new job with Lockheed Martin back in San Jose, California as a Sr. Systems Engineer on Satellite ground systems. What can I say, I literally walked, ate and slept on all of the continents, except Antarctica - which I've seen from the air, during those 11-years of service, and the experience led me to where I am today!
