John's Story
Life
Seeker of the geographical solution for awhile: lived in Indiana, Los Angeles, Mexico, Boston, Cincinnati, upstate New York, and finally settled in Baltimore. Currently Executive Director of the Public Justice Center, a nonprofit public interest legal advocacy organization.
Married to Emily Hunt since 1980, who I met on a political support committee in college. She now works as a field examiner / compliance officer at the National Labor Relations Board.
We have one son, Justin, born in 1989, currently at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He's into film, music, and political activism.
In the little time left between work and family, my escape is long distance backpacking on the Appalachian Trial. Since 1999 I've hiked over 1300 miles, from Tennessee to Vermont.
College
Earlam College, Richmond, Indiana. 1974-1978. B.A. in Anthropology/Sociology. Ran away to after freshman year to Los Angeles, California (great place for a 19 year old to be in the mid-7O's!), learned community organizing with the United Farm Workers. Dropped back in to college, organized the UFW Support Committee, which organized a school wide boycott on non-union lettuce. Student government representative. Minor in Spanish. Anthropology field study with ...Expand for more
Zapotecan village in Oaxaca, Mexico.
After college, I worked as a paralegal at Legal Services Organization of Indiana, in Indianapolis and Kokomo, representing farm workers migrating from El Paso, Texas up through Minnesota.
Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Massachusetts. 1979-1982. J.D., 1982. Lived off campus, not very involved in school, but very involved in organizing tenant unions in Jamaica Plain, a poor neighborhood in Boston. Got my paper and I was free!
After law school, worked in legal aid organizations in Cincinnati and upstate New York from 1982-88, primarily representing tenants, tenant unions, and employees. Moved to Baltimore in 1988 because my wife got a job there. I've come to love this town, although its a small town and not being born here, I'll never be recognized as a local.
I worked for the Consumer Protection Division with the Attorney General of Maryland for 14 years, 1988-2002, suing con artists, advocating for pro-consumer legislation. I've also been very involved in the nonprofit community development world in Baltimore.
In 2002 I became the Executive Director of the Public Justice Center, a nonprofit public interest law firm based in Baltimore. It's been great to return to the nonprofit world and advocacy.
