John's Story

Here's my story. I went to college at a tiny, liberal arts, Quaker school in Indiana called Earlham College. I went there because the only other college I applied to, Oberlin, didn't accept me. My parents wanted me to go to Earlham, because both of them were from Indiana and had grown up hearing good things about it. Plus, my mother was a Quaker, and she tried to instill Quaker values in me and Jennifer, although for me, it's only in the last few years that those values have showed up. In one way, Earlham was about the worst place I could have gone. I had devoted myself to raising holy hell throughout high school, and Earlham was chock-full of leftist, pacifist, antiwar, antiracist kids from all over the country, who didn't hardly raise an ounce of hell. Within two months, I was a leftist, pacifist, antiwar, antiracist hell raiser, and since I didn't do a good job of keeping my mouth shut, I tended to stand out on campus. Plus, an awful lot of my fellow students were high achievers; many had gone to private prep schools, but even those who went to public schools were much better prepared for college than I was. er right, in those days Tennessee ranked near the bottom of the list in public school education. I became convinced I wasn't so bright after all, stopped trying hard, got involved in the school newspaper and eventually became its editor, and dropped out on academic probation after my junior year. I moved back to Nashville, got a job and rented a number of different houses with high school friends. It was during this year and a half or so that I spent a lot of time with Charlie Horswill, Mike Miller, his sister Karen, Nick Rather, Mike Phillips, Mallarie Freeman, and members of Mike Miller's and Nick's band, who spent a lot of time on the road. During this time this group of people achieved a pinnacle of hell raising that has got to be called art. I say this (with all modesty) because the kinds of things we went out and did in public were not (very) destructive, but were aimed to mess with people's minds. Charlie was the acknowledged guru of the group. If you ever met him, you would probably come away thinking he was either a genius or an idiot. Anyway, that experience prepared me well for the rest of my life. More later.
