John's Story

I left Huntington in the fall of 1959 and moved to Pontiac, Mi. and then several years later to Detroit, where I still reside. I returned to school in 1960 and attended Pontiac High School through the 12th grade. I worked a full time job from age 16 until I retired in 2005 when I was the Regional Manager for a large department store chain. I have always written poems and short stories and in 2002 had my first book published, titled "Pieces of White." Since then I have had five books published and also write for a poetry based website named "Notes of Life." I also have four websites, three devoted to my work and another devoted to the 50's and 60's. Google John Pouch and you can find them if you wish. I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. There are so many people I remember as I grew up in Huntington. I had many girlfriends. Sandra Deeds was my first real crush but Mattie Harshbarger, Toni Washington and my next door neighbor, Teresa Conrad, were also favorites of mine. There was Sue Clark and Karen White from Lincoln Elem. and I had a crush on Teresa Ray and Barbara Partlow, as well as Naomi Staten and Barbara Cook while attending Lincoln Jr. High. I really fell head over heels for Peggy Gartin when I was 15 or 16. I also really liked Cathy Rhodes, Carol Hendrixson and Sally (sorry I forgot the last name) who was the Manager of JB's place on 27th street. JB's was a little soda shoppe that had a couple booths, a snack bar and a jutebox crammed with the music we all loved in the 50's. Man, we had some great times at JB's. What wonderful memories. I had many guy friends as well. I had a clubhouse in the back of our house on 28th St. where all the neighborhood kids hung out. Charlie Jones, Terry Ashworth, Sherman and Jesse James, my little brother Tony and many others came to the clubhouse every day. At Lincoln Jr. High, I hung out with Walter Jefferson a...Expand for more
nd Kiki Jefferson, Richard Copley, Larry Henry, Reno Roswell and others. I was also good friends with Gary and Darrel VanHoose, Bobby Watts,David Hicks, Pete Zornes, Delmus Lunsford, Lloyd Holley, Larry Wallace, Butch Leadman,Pete Herbert, Eddie Pritchard, the Creameans brothers,Kenny Judd, (even though we fought a few times) Larry Gartin.....the list goes on and on. Some of the bad memories are of Eugene Kiefer who was killed in an auto accident and when my friend Larry Henry passed away. I have recently learned that Reno Roswell and Stevie and Sherman James have passed on. I remember them as good friends and cannot imagine my childhood and teenage years without them! I am sure there are others. None of us are getting any younger, but the memory of those youthful days in Huntington will always let us know that we at least have known such a Spring! I have not seen any of the mentioned folks since I left Huntington in 1959, but I can still remember their smiling faces and wonderful personalities in my memories. I have a website set-up that embraces the 50's and 60's called "Let the Good Times Roll." If you get a chance, visit me there. And please, if anyone wishes to write or e-mail me, I would love to hear from you and I promise to return your inquiry. Be good to yourself and it was wonderful talking with you again after all these years....you still look like a million dollars!!!! I am posting one of my poems here from my book, Lucid Thoughts. I hope you enjoy it! I Knew Such a Spring I knew such a spring! Such wonderful flowers blooming. Entranced was I with lilac bough of such purple pluming. I watched fly such gay larks that went singing, upward zooming. Such songs that to young love was but heavens crooning. I know no such springs now. I may not again. Lilacs have been blown away by years persistent wind. Songs have been forgotten by larks on the wing, yet I will never forget that I knew such a spring. copyright 2005 john pouch
