John's Story

A year after graduating high school, I enlisted in the Air Force. I was stationed in upstate NY, but my job as an aircraft crew chief took me to many places around the world. After my 4 year enlistment was up, I returned to Long Island, got married, and started college under the G.I. Bill. I graduated from SUNY Stony Brook in 1974 with a degree in Political Science, and then went to law school at Oklahoma City University School of Law. While there, my first son, Jason, was born in 1976. After graduation, I returned to New York to take the NY bar exam. I was sworn in as an attorney in NY in 1978, and soon thereafter, I re-joined the Air Force as an Air Force attorney (JAG officer). My first assignment was back in upstate NY for 3 years, where I served as a criminal defense attorney. My second son, Justin, was born there in 1981. From there, I was next stationed in Illinois as a contracts attorney. Then to Wiesbaden, Germany for 3 years as a medical malpractice attorney for all Air Force medical facilities in Europe. A divorce followed, and I was single for the next 10 years. After Germany, in 1987 I was stationed in England for 2 years, serving as the senior base attorney at RAF Mildenhall Air Base. In 1989, I was reassigned back to America, as a circuit military judge for the southeastern U.S. In 1992, I moved to Tucson, AZ, where I was the senior base attorney for the next 3 years. In 1995, I was promoted to the rank of Colonel, and was assigned to Japan as the Chief Circuit Military Judge for the Pacific. While in Japan, I got remarried, to Major Martha Herron. This year (2016) will mark 20 years of marriage! Following that assignment, I wa...Expand for more
s assigned to Aviano, Italy in 1998, where I served as the senior attorney for HQ 16th Air Force. In 2000, I was assigned to Washington DC, to be the Chief Trial Judge of the Air Force. I served in that position until 1 August 2004, when I retired from the United States Air Force. I was blessed to have had a great career, work with the most amazing and dedicated professionals, and live and travel all around the world. But my greatest joy comes seeing my two sons grow in to fine, successful men, husbands, and fathers. They have blessed me with 2 fabulous daughters-in-law, and 5 incredible grandchildren, whom I adore to no end. My wife Martha and I now live in Virginia, where we enjoy various volunteer organizations and hobbies. I have taken up beekeeping for the last 7 years, and love getting outdoors and enjoying nature. Looking back at my life, I'm reminded of the lyrics of a Sinatra song: "Regrets, I've got a few; but then again, too few to mention." I guess I've done pretty well for a kid that barely made it out of Plainedge High School with a cumulative average of 69. I credit my early Air Force years, for giving me time to grow up and take stock of my life and where I was headed. I retain many wonderful, and some bittersweet memories of those high school days...hanging out with my buddies at Holiday Park, singing Doo Wop, and of course, my high school sweetheart, Julie. I was so looking forward to finally being able to attend a class reunion, my 50th, last year, and was literally in route, when I had to turn around when we got word my father-in-law had passed. From all reports, a good time was had by all. Well, maybe there will be a 55th!
