I married in August of 1968, seven days after my eighteenth birthday and had three children by the time I was twenty-one. For a few years I worked as a meat cutter, something I began doing at age fifteen. Desiring to pursue further education I took a job in the building materials supply business in 1971. The work was hard (feeding 160,000 lbs of concrete slabs into a machine by hand in an eight hour shift), but it paid well and would free up my evenings to go back to school. Two major things occurred that altered my education plans. The first was a promotion that greatly increased my income and hours, but left little time for school. Then, in 1974, I began attending church in an effort to get answers to some gnawing spiritual questions. In a short time I became a Christian, an event that would change the direction of my life.
