John's Story

After graduation I went to Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, and obtained a bachelor's degree in metallurgy. I met Pat Greszler of Oberlin the summer of 1967 at Cedar Point, where I worked evenings, and we were marriedin July of 1968. I worked at ALCOA in Cleveland for a year but realized I didn't want a career in quality assurance, so went back to Case to complete Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science (fancy word for metallurgy), finally leaving in 1974. We had two kids while I was in grad school. We moved to Idaho Falls, ID in 1974 the day after Evel Knievel almost jumped the Snake River canyon, and worked for Argonne National Laboratory at the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II Project. Our youngest daugnter was born in IF. Then on to Detroit in 1979 where I taught for two years at Wayne State University. Went to work for Climax Molybdenum in Ann Arbor in 1981, and stayed with them through countless organizational changes and owners for 25 years, moving from Detroit to Milford CT in 1984 and back to Cleveland in 1989. I retired Nov 2006, and am now consulting for my previous company and a few others, focusing on refractory metals (Mo, W, Ta, Nb, Re). Believe it or not, there is a living t...Expand for more
here! Should have done it a long time ago. We have been extraordinarily fortunate to have hosted a number of students and adults from foreign countries since returning to Cleveland, and now have friends and "family" in Germany, France, Russia, Azerbaijian, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa. Our goal is to visit them all on their home turf. After August, 2008 we will have only Azerbaijian and Ethiopia left on the list, though it could continue to grow. Probably not a good time for Americans to be going to those places. Our eldest daughter Julie is a teacher in the Cleveland school district; she and her husband Rich have two boys, Dillon (5) and Thomas (3). Our son John works at the company from which I retired (HC Starck...the latest owner); he and his wife Anne have a daughter, Stefie (10 mo). Our youngest daughter Becky left teaching in frustration, and is now a law student at the University of Baltimore, where she lives. I'm an avid amateur singer; the best days of my week are almost always lesson and rehearsal days. I sing with a 116-year old men's chorus in Cleveland, cantor at church, and from time to time sing with other groups for specific concerts. I've been to most of the reunions over the years, so perhaps I'll see you at one too.
