John's Story
When I was at Carmel High, I had a blast. I was the shortest kid in school.
I fought with Jim D'Orazzi on the Senior Steps and Jim just took the "club
with nails" and right from my hands and crushed the nails splitting the club.
That earned me permission as a freshman to hang.
I lockered with Mike Merlo who talked me into being
the varsity football manager. I did, I was the first freshman
to earn my varsity letter that year. All 4'4" and 59 LBS.
I wresteled that year and also ran track.
My first race there in Carmel at the track my sister
Mary Jo played Johnny B Goode over the PA for me.
Go Johnny Go...Go.
I also Surfed and sailed there, donated a small El Toro for the school
I want to give a shout out to Bob W...Expand for more
althour, who is such a class
act and always let me lead, even when we took the class sailing
in Monterey.
I helped him rig the boat and after he left the harbour he gave me the tiller
and I sailed us up to the glass bottom boat place. The day was sunny and cool,
with a healthy breeze, almost ot white caps.
The only correcttion that Mr. Walthaur needed to give me was that he didn't like me
to beat to whindward with the rail in the water up to the shourds. He let me know that
we weren't racing and that he thought it might be a good idea to trim out the mainsail a bit.
I did, and just let it back wind a bit to keep her not heeled over so much.
If you stop by please say hi and let me know what you remember of things.
