John's Story

John is from New York, New York. He is single. His schools include Holy Trinity High School and two colleges he'd rather forget. He works as a a Freelance Writer, primarily of Fiction. Both of his novels, his novella, and his short stories have been recognized for literary awards. As a pedestrian, he was hit by a car in 2002, resulting in a few broken ribs, and several broken vertebra. He sees far too many doctors, takes far too many pills, and hasn't had nearly the operations he needs. Don't feel sorry; he spends much more time on his laptop doing research and writing than before the accident. Music John likes includes John Lennon, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday. Books he likes include The Source, Summerland (novel). Movies he likes include Fred Astaire, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant. TV shows he likes include Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Jeopardy, and Cosmos. One of John's favorite quotes is:"...And God's desire through our hollow whistle blows.". More about John:"too complex to fit in here." My first novel was published in 2001.It was nominated for a major book award, but didn't win. The sequel came out in 2006 along with my first novella. Both nominated for multiple book awards Both won one. My few forays into short stories (I'm really long-winded and prefer working on a novel or novella) were all very well received--one named in the list of best short stories of the year and my last...Expand for more
(long) short story was praised by every critic in the field. I write under an assumed name, so that no member of my family need suffer the outrage of people who find some of the things I write offensive in their own small-minded way. In April of 2002, I was crossing Hicksville Rd. in Bethpage, and and 80+ y.o. woman ran me down at a T-intersection. She was looking right and turning left. She admitted in court that she never saw me until I went flying past her windshield. This story gets worse, but there's no need to depress everyone. I'm working on a new novel now. It's very different from anything I've written before and took years to research. Wish me luck! (1/23/14) I left my literary agent of many years. We didn't see eye-to-eye on my changing direction in my fiction from genre to more mainstream and literary fiction. I've out inquiries to some top NYC literary agents. One wrote back to say that they were interested in me and my work. Two major agents called me at home to invite me to come aboard. I'm in a very good spot for a writer right now. I can't say more about the novel I'm working on now. One, I don't like expending the energy to talk about the book, rather than writing it. Two, I tend to keep my projects "close to the vest." You never know who might like the idea enough to steal it and publish it before I do. Publishing used to be a gentleman's field, now it's fairly cutthroat.
