John's Story
Update 7-18-09
Earlier this year, I moved to the beach. I'm living right on the water in Bodega Bay, CA. It's remote and beautiful. Hitchcock's 'The Birds' was filmed here. Often, I'm the only person in the neighborhood. The wildlife watches me as much as I do it. The other day, I watched a bobcat hunt for an hour in the field next door.
I lived in Petaluma, CA on the banks of the Petaluma River for a couple of years . I've been in Northern California for about 15 years, most of that time in a bedroom community called Mill Valley.
Since I left school, I've traveled extensively and been at the scene of some amazing stuff. I've worked in as an engineer in Defense, edited the Whole Earth Review and launched an online business in 1994, among other things.
When I got to California, I quickly adopted the independent consultant lifestyle. I write, consult and strategize. You can see some of my stuff at interbiznet.com where I wrote a daily column for 13 years.
These days, I am interested in several areas:
- Population trends
- Recruiting Technology
- Web based communities
- Organization...Expand for more
al evolution.
I work for myself, more or less. I sit on boards, help businesses go public, write and teach.
I went to Northern India for the month of October, 08. The trip ran through the basic history of Buddhism, wandered through Nepal and ended up in Daramsalah. It was life altering in a number of ways (one being the surprise discovery that I wasn't a Buddhist after all)
I started traveling back and forth across the country the day I graduated from high school. I've made about a dozen cross-country drives, usually in a roadster of some sort.
The other day, I sat down on an airplane. It felt like home.
I was married for 27 years. I have three amazing kids. The older two are out of college. Ray is an artist after 5 years at RISD. Bridget is a social justice oriented grant writer who went to school all over the world (including Ghana and ground zero).
My youngest (Kate) starts at UC Santa Cruz in September. She is fluent in Spanish and wants to work for the CIA.
I've been a pretty serious zen student over the years.
I started a business a couple of years ago. It's going well.
