John's Story

Life Hello all...class of 85! Well, I didn't quite make it all the way through in Moscow, but Moscow still feels like my real highschool class. Madison was fun, but too big to be a class. So, life since Moscow: last two years of highschool in Madison WI, which turned out to be pretty cool after a semester or so of being invisible. There's beautiful lakes in Madison, and the university crowd makes it fun. Then two years of college at Harvard, which was intense and interesting but pretty overwhelming. I got to write a lot for the school paper and made some good friends who I still see regularly. Between sophomore and junior year, I spent a year living in rural Scotland, working odd jobs and being a 20 year old away from home for the first time. It's as beautiful there as in Idaho, and the area where I lived had a landscape a lot like the Palouse. Then another year of college in crowded, claustrophobic, dirty Boston, and then three years of traveling, switching between working 2-3 jobs in Madison and living in beautiful Costa Rica. Came back to Boston to finish school in 93, fell in love, and spent a couple years working at a Very Serious magazine. Left that to work at a Very Relaxed coffee shop for a year. One of my customers was a private investigator. We bonded around having both grown up living all over the place, and I ended up working for him for about 4 years, doing criminal investigations in and around Boston. Very interesting, and my boss was an amazing guy, but it got pretty depressing after awhile. As a break...Expand for more
from that, I spent a year working on a travel guide to Costa Rica, which opened the way to doing freelance travel writing based -- ah yes -- from home. Just research and imagination, and no more airports and crappy hotels. While all that was getting going, I decided to go divinity school at Harvard, a program which lets you study religion and literature at the same time, which was amazing. I just finished last June. I'm still trying to write, not the great American novel, but something good, maybe a little more international, and fun. America's too cut off from the rest of the world, even before Bush, and I think it's bad for us. I'm working on an article about my p.i. boss, and on a kids book series which, like Harry Potter, is meant for adults to enjoy as well. It starts in America and heads off to other countries and religions through the books the kid reads -- kind of like Alice going through the looking glass... Aside from all the sitting still and writing, the other exciting thing in my life is that my brother, who graduated from Moscow in 80 (he got out of his senior exams after Mt St Helens!) has been teaching me to surf, up in Maine, where he lives with his wife and kids. It's awesome! He moved back to Hawaii after highschool and then eventually ended up in Maine. I'm still unmarried, after a number of happy and sad romantic tales, but am currently living with my lovely redheaded girlfriend Aleen Saraceno, who will be coming with me to the reunion if we can make it. I hope to see everybody and to catch up!
