John's Story
Life
After high school I was juggling college, a job at a burger joint and 3 bands. I was waiting for that big break into the club scene so I could make a living off of rock and roll. I quickly found that I was juggling way too much and my grades hit the toilet, so, like a genius, I quit school (It was my money that I was wasting).
In 82 I met Bonnie Worrell from Mt. Holly at the Satellite Lounge and my life changed. I got a steady job in construction, quit the bands I was in and started going to church again.
We got married in 83 and adopted Bonnie's 4 year-old niece Heather in 84 who had been in foster homes since she was 2. Rebecca was born in 87 and Sean in 90.
I got really involved in church; music at first. When our kids got beyond nursery age and into something they called "Children's Church" I got involved in that. I thought church ought to be more fun for kids: silly songs, puppetry, skits, clowning; we did it all that. At one point I quit my job and worked full time at the church wearing a whole lot of hats: Children's Pastor, Music Director/Worship Leader, Janitor. I went on 2 mission's trips one to Belarus in 94 and one to Madgascar in 01.
Eventually, I had to go back to work. Sometimes it would get hard to p...Expand for more
ay the bills on a church salary, but I probably didn't cut back enough on the church stuff. I was trying to juggle what amounted to 2 full-time jobs and my family was falling apart, so, I up and quit the ministry. That was about 2002.
I got back to doing drywall, now more as a contractor, but I'm a hands on guy, not one of those contractors who no longer pick up tools.
2010 was a bad year. In April the wife left after 27 years of marriage. In August my father passed away and I had to move in to my mother's house to take care of her. She's been wheelchair bound since 2004 or so. It was a difficult time but thanks to good friends, and a lot of introspection I know I am much better off. We did move Mom to California to stay with my brother. He works from home and my sister is out there as well, living 20 miles away so the support she gets out there was more than I could do here on my own. I fly out to visit her a couple times a year.
Music has become a big part of my life again. I'm working with my two oldest and dearest friends, Jim Mayberry and Kevin Ayers in a 3 piece band called Whiskey Grin. I met a wonderful woman on Match.com and we've been togeher since January 2012. Life is good.
