John's Story
Right after graduation I began working for Grand Auto Stores (left the graduation party at Cypress Bowl and walked down the steps to the Monte Mart store and started my adult life.
In April '67 I enlisted in the Navy and went to Diego for boot camp in August '67. Graduated as "Outstanding Recruit" in November and assigned to USS Frontier and deployed to Hawaii for 6 months. Following decomissioning of Frontier, was then assigned to USS Berkeley and deployed to Viet Nam. Was on that ship for 13 months, advanced to E-4 and reassigned to USS Blue and again deployed for another tour in the Tonkin Gulf. At the end of that tour I was eligible for shore duty and assigned to the staff of the Commander Western Sea Frontier until the end of my enlistment in May '71. I married Gloria Soares. In June '74 I reenlisted in the Naval Reserve Active Duty program and remained in Monterey for 4 years at the Naval Reserve Center as Stationkeeper. I remained on active duty for the next 16years untill retirement in Sept '90. During those years I was assigned to activities in New Orleans, LA; Alameda, CA; Willow Grove, PA; and Oakland, CA. Following retirement from the Navy I began working for The Home Depot, opening stores in Pleasanton, CA; Concord, CA; and my current store in Redding, CA.
I was divorced in 1995 and remained single until marrying my new wife Mary in 2000. I have 2 children and Mary has 3 and between us we have 8 terrific grandkids ranging in ages from 10 to 22.
Thats the readers digest of my life after Junipero and have fondest memories of those days in the Quad.
