John's Story

Life Gee. How to summarize twenty years in less than 4000 words! For your sake I'll try to keep it under 1000 words. Some of you may remember that I went to BYU in the fall of '83. I froze my butt off in Utah (and was pretty homesick). To top it off I suffered my very first broken heart. For reasons I can't really remember, I was certain that I was going to marry Kristen DeLeon after high school. But Kristen went to UCR and, like so many tragic tales, found a life that didn't include little ol' me. I know you're all reaching for the Kleenex as you read this. Still love ya, Kristen. Anyway, after a year at BYU, I went to Argentina for two years as a missionary. Great experience. Tough, thankless work. Wouldn't trade it for the world. When I got home I went back to BYU, met a girl named Mindy and married her way too soon. I was only 22 but I thought I was as smart as I was ever going to be. As it turned out, not quite. We divorced five and a half years later. But not before bringing into this world the greatest joy of my life: Brandon Christopher. He's ten now and becoming almost as much of a smartass as his dad! After college I enrolled in the UCLA School of Dentistry. Yup. I'm a dentist believe it or not. My office is in Los Alamitos. I have a partner, a couple associate dentists (one of which is Mike Zell by the way--EUHS '85) and life is good. I am also trying my hand at a totally unrelated career: screenwriting. It would take ...Expand for more
too long to explain how in the heck I started writing screenplays but suffice to say that my first "Hollywood" type project is very close to completion. Coming to a theater near you. I was a single dad for almost eight years but that came to an abrupt end in March, 2000. I had met a gorgeous young lady named Nicole the year before in a little restaurant in Sunset Beach. The very first time I saw her (she worked at the restaurant) I turned to my friend and said, "I'm going to marry that girl some day." Of course he looked at me as if I were smoking dope. But, sure enough, Nikki was foolish enough to marry me a year later. I could have and would have walked down the aisle after our first date. Nikki is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside--which takes some doing! I am very lucky to have her and we are very happy together. No children yet but it's fun trying. Okay, that's pretty much it. Some other highlights (and lowlights) of the past 20 years include: - walking on burning hot coals - being on Mark and Brian (KLOS) - swimming past a shark off Maui - spending an afternoon with Elizabeth Taylor - getting arrested (I'm not proud of this but I can explain) I look forward to our twenty year reunion especially since I wasn't able to make our ten year. If there is anyone out there who remembers me and who liked me (I know I'm really narrowing it down here) please feel free to contact me by e-mail. Love to hear from you. God bless, John
