John's Story

I was the only Sociologist at a technical college that trains scientists and engineers until I retired July 1, 2014. . On the other hand my field is the sociology of science, so that was not bad. I tired to teaching Introductory sociology 1-2 times a year for 38 years. Now I have to decide which research interest to pursue and do some traveling. . I followed follow the nuclear power issue both power plants and weapons proliferation issue, but am sort of through with that except to design a model UN type role playing game out of it. I have a continuing interest in why NASA's return to the Moon planned for 2020 was canceled and wonder what will happen when China arrives about then. With the oil era ending in about 70 years, I think the next main energy source for electricity will be fusion reactors-- and the perfect fuel for them is not found on Earth, but it is "locally" available on the moon. About one space ship loan of about 26 tons of helium 3 should provide enough electricity to run the USA for a year at current levels of demand. It is a continuing interest to make a case for a lunar base, so I joined a team that designed one that could be built by 2069 out of local materials, pay for itsel...Expand for more
f and feed itself. Since current 5th graders will probably be the ones to build something like that I am working on a team to design a set of lunar themed science curriculum enrichment activity units. These would go with the chapters on the solar system, matter, energy, electricity, light , forces motion and botany. I want this to be a female friend approach to science since gender equity in the technical professions is another interest. I also spend considerable time thinking about what it means to be a technologically literate citizen in a technological society. Getting ready for the end of the Oil era in about 50 years is going to be a major issue for rest of our lives and those of our children. I think a period akin to the discovery of the New World in 1492 is starting, and the next 500 years will be darned interesting. Too bad I will only see the opening act of this play. The book I am thinking about writing is on 40 years of research in the area of cognitive style. if anyone is curious about how they relate to research, peer review, leadership, learning and SAT performance as well as creativity and productivity in laboratory teams, let me know and I will bounce some ideas off of you.
