John's Story
Johnny L. Williams graduated from Meadowbrook in 1978, and has a B.A. from Malone College in Canton, Ohio, and an M.A. from Columbia International University. In addition, he took three semesters of graduate level linguistic training at The University of North Dakota and The University of Texas at Arlington.
He has served since 1986 as a linguist and translator with the Mixtec people of Oaxaca, Mexico, working part of the time out of Tucson, Arizona. The New Testament in Mixtec has been recorded and published, and a dedication celebration was held on March 15, 2008. He worked as the language survey coordinator for eight years with SIL-Mexico, and currently works as a translation consultant.
John published a serious comedy semi-autobiographical novel called "The Just Friends Syndrome: Memoirs of a shy ...Expand for more
guy's search for true love." About 1/3 of the book takes place in Guernsey County. Previous writings have been published in The International Journal of American Linguistics and an Inter-Varsity publication. "The Just Friends Syndrome" is John's first published book. Two short stories have won awards from Writers Digest.
Johnny enjoys playing and watching most sports, reading, riding his motorcycle and seeing new places. He spent the summer of 1981 in the Philippines on a summer mission internship, he took a trip to Holland, Belgium and France with a free airline coupon, where he stayed in hostels, and visited Chiang Mai, Thailand and Brasilia, Brazil attending meetings when he was a language survey coordinator. He has also traveled quite a bit around Mexico during his 22 years living and working there
