John's Story

I went to elementary school in Waterford at John Montieth and Della Lutes before moving to Pontiac in 5th grade attending LeBaron and Madison Jr. High I would like friends I knew in Waterford to contact me. I lived at 2233 Crane St. My Dad first taught at Pontac Central and started the sport of wrestling in Pontiac. I went from PNHS to Indiana on a wrestling scholarship with Bill Green. We roomed together and joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Bill and I have some stories to tell about our stay there. I retired in 2006 after 34 yrs. teaching at Evanston Twp. HS in Illinois. In those 34 years I also coached football 8 years, wrestlling 19 yrs. and golf 20 yrs. Nancy and I met in 1975 and married in 1976. After 32 years we are still very much in love. We have four great children. Andrew, 28, is married to Lindsey. They live in Colorado and are school teachers. Eric 26, also an Indiana grad, is a photography teacher and coach. Brent 24, a Northwestern engineering grad, has chosen banking over engineering. Laura 21 is a junior in college and an elementary major. No grand kids yet. We have spent our summers in Colorado and love hiking, climbing 14,000 ft. mountains, fishing, golfing and horseback riding. I now do some carpentry and home repair, a lot on my own home. In 2007 I went to Louisiana twice to do Katrina relief, spent a week in the UP doing carpentry at a church camp, got to Colorado 4 times, and took a road trip to Arizona where Nancy and I climbed among the grand Saguaro cactus'. I am sure my Pontiac friends all remember my Dad and know he passed away in 2003 and mom passed in 2006. We all miss them. We have bred golden retrievers over the years and have birthed 50 puppies. Most famous one was purchased for...Expand for more
Amelio Estaves and Paula Abdul back when they were married. We now have only one golden but for a few years had four. We have faced many of the stresses related to raising kids, family illnesses and the death of loved ones that many of you have but overall we have been blessed. The summer of 2006 I hiked 60 miles in Glacier and Yellowstone with my daughter Laura and son Eric. Not bad for an old man. I don't feel old. 2008 started with a rupture of my right achilles tendon playing tennis with my son in Florida. I am sure age had something to do with that. I saw the doctor at 4 1/2 months and she says I have set a new record for healing. "Good genes", she says. I went snow shoeing twice in Colorado the week before seeing her. Thanks to Lynn Williams, I talked to Jim Banta for the first time in 35 years. I was best man in his wedding. UPDATE...The 40th reunion was a blast. I reconnected with so many of my classmates. Even with those I did not hang out with in high school, there was a special bond of friendship. The further we get from high school we find ourselves more alike. It is no longer the jocks, the musicians, the greasers, etc. We are the Huskies, class of 68. If you are looking for a great read, pick up a copy of EPIC by John Eldredge. Only 100 pages. If you loved Brave Heart, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Cinderella, etc. this book will help you understand why. He has written some other great books as well. God Speed. PS. Did you know my first two girlfriends, Debbie McLean and Nancy Church both gave back my rings? I vowed I would never give another woman a ring unless it was my wife. Well.....I was engaged twice before I met my wife Nancy and guess what...I got two more rings back but the third time was a charm!
