John's Story
Life
Marietta and I have been married for 36 years this summer. We have 5 children and 7 grandchildren. They are all great people. After Brewer, I went on to A&M and then to military. I served 22 years active and reserve time and had a good career. I also have taught school in Texas and in junior colleges. My wife is in Daycare, self-employed. Have had a great life and many great experiences. I have had a lot of good opportunities to work with young people over the years, very rewarding. Currently work for the postal service(9 and 1/2 years now) and will retire in four more years. Had the best of both worlds as civilian and army reserve officer. Saw both sides. Take care, JW.
Workplace
Besides what is listed in other background above, I have worked in many kinds of things over the years. In college, I worked as waiter in mess hall, work study on campus. Summer jobs included printers assistant and collections. While teaching in Bryan, was store security for Krogers(catching 100 shoplifters and doing check collections), also radio announcer part time at three stations. After leaving military in 1990 was store security and loss prevention for Hastings and taught junior college in Kansas City. Security and loss prevention for Half Price Store. Worked for Catholic Cemetaries in KC doing services and helping people with cemetary arrangements. Also worked on map project at KU updating and editing maps for major project as ed...Expand for more
itorial assistant. Then went to work for post office as city carrier. Also worked several years in daycare assisting my wife in her business. J.
Military
After graduating from A&M in 1970 I was appointed a regular army officer in Infantry. Attended IOBC(Basic branch), Ranger Course and Airborne in 70-71 at Ft. Benning. Served in Germany in the 1-15th Inf(Audie Murphys outfit), the Can Do Battalion, so named from the Boxer Rebellion in China. Was Platoon leader there and then later legal officer at the Second Bridage Headquarters. After serving 3 years left active duty and began school teaching at Floresville and later in Bryan. Came back on active duty in 1981 teaching ROTC at Ada, Oklahoma. Later attended and graduated Command and General Staff College at Ft Leavenworth. Then assigned in St Louis where I was personnel management officer in Infantry Branch for 30 months assisting hundreds of majors and ltcs in their careers and assisted many of them in getting promoted. Came to Lawrence, Ks for last assignment teaching at KU in ROTC. My summer duties over the years, while school teaching included stints at the Ranger Department, instructing a live fire range at Ft Lewis, running a TOW range at Ft. Hood and other assignments. Served with many great people over the years. One of very few reserve officers to serve at 10 ROTC advanced camps from 1975 to 1989, teaching thousands of cadets during those years.
Take care, J.
