John's Story
After high school I was drafted by the New York Yankees as an outfielder but didn't sign. I went on to Pasadena City College and played two years of baseball. I received my AA and again was drafted each year by the Angels and Mets each time as an outfielder. After my second year I was invited to play summer ball in Fairbanks, Alaska. I stayed for 6 wks. The manager was the baseball coach for San Diego State. He offered me a scholarship to pitch for his team. I pitched, played outfield and first base for the Alaska team.
I went to SDSU for one year. I played mainly as a pitcher and had a record of 8 wins and 3 losses.
I signed with the St. Louis Cardinals the next year and didn't play my senior year.
I started my professional career in Lewiston, Idaho for 3 wks. and moved to Modesto, Ca. to finish the season. That year I was 5 - 1 all pitching. My first full year came in 1972 where I returned to Modesto. We won the league that year but I was converted to a short releif pitcher. I was 9-5 with 8 saves. After a good year I was invited to Florida to play in the Cardinal's winter league.
I played for 3 mos. and decided to stay in Florida for the winter. I had a very good winter league and was told I would be invited to big league spring training with St. Louis. That winter I worked for the parks department making an astounding $1.91 an hour. My wife also worked p...Expand for more
art time in retail sales. We made it through the winter.
I trained all winter and started spring training in February. I worked hard and pitched in 8 games all in relief. I had 12 inngings with no runs allowed. That was good enough to make the Cardinals as a non-roster player. I played professional baseball for the next 7 years. 1973 was the only year I was in the big leagues. 1974 I was traded to the Angels and returned to the starting rotation. I hurt my arm and never made it back to the majors leagues. I again was traded to the Mets and pitched in AA and AAA. I played winter ball in Santo Domingo for Tommy Lasorda 1973 and spent two more winters in Mexico. I came home in Aug. of 1977 and never returned to play. I did give up home run # 688 to Hank Arron. I will always remember that game.
My overall records: 14-6 (A), 26-16 (AA), 3-1 (AAA) and 1-1 with St. Louis. Around 12-7 in winter ball.
I now had to go to work for real. I worked for B of A for 3 years and didn't like the tie and working inside. I applied for a police officer's position in Nov. of 80 and started the academy Jan. of 81. I worked for 24 yrs. in law enforcement and retired Jan. 04.
My wife of 37+ years retired from retail sales for Rob-May (29 yrs.). We now work part-time baby-sitting our two grandaughters 2 and 5 yrs. I also have 3 grandsons but do not baby-sit them.
I do not miss working.
