JOHN's Story

I don't know where to start. After graduation. I surfed, partied and hung out with friends. I think it was a month or two later my dad told me it was time to get a job. A friend (Robert Long) told me about a job working for the U.S. Forest Service. I applied and got the job in early July 1980. I started as a seasonal wildland firefighter on the Los Padres N.F. near Cachuma Lake, outside of Santa Barbara. I worked there for eight seasons, until I was picked up full time in the fall of 1988 on the Angeles N.F. with the Texas Canyon Hotshots. The crew is based outside of the city limits of Santa Clarita, Ca. or the Magic Mountain area. I've been with the Texas Canyon Hotshots for about 28 years. I worked my way through the ranks, starting as a Hotshot Squad boss, Hotshot Captain, and in 2002 I became the Superintendent of the crew. e end of 2016 fire season. I would have served the U.S. Forest Service and the American public for about 34+ years and out of those 34+ year, 32 years would all have been on Hotshots. I love this job. I have fought fires from California to Florida, Alaska to Mexico and other states in between. This job doses take a toll on relationships. I would start with a girlfriend in the winter and by mid-summer I would be single. Got married, got divorced. But got two grate boys out of it. What an adventure, I don't think I would change a thing. OK, Maybe a couple of things. When I retire. I will be relocating to Tennessee, east of Memphis. Where I have a house and property, so I can be closer to Mom, Brother Ken living in Florida, and Sister Kim living in Texas. I think it is about time I have a summer vacation. It has been so long I forgot what was it like. Start catching up with some old friends.
