John's Story
I really don't have a story, but I have written by obit.
Marquette, Michigan
The angel of death came to call on John B. Ashby ________. As he was dragged away, he was heard shouting, "You want Jim Ashby, you dolt! Can't you do anything right?
Ashby was born in South Bend, Indiana on April 18th 1937. after his mother, Josephine, suffered twelve hours of intense labor pain. His mother and father, Wendell Paul Ashby, were divorced within a year.
From his Scot-Irish grandfather, he inherited asthma, hearing problems, and a life-long burning resentment of any kind of authority that served him well in neither th long or short run. His was a personality of kick up and kiss down.
Sickly and unpleasant as an infant, his mother's devout Catholicism was the only reason he was not dropped of the Jefferson Street bridge into the churning waters of the St. Joseph River.
He was educated in the public and parochial schools of South Bend. He did not distinguish himself in any positive way. He was a slacker.
After being told many times that he needed discipline, Ashby made the mistake of joining the Air Force in September of 1955 to fight godless, atheistic Communism. He spent 45 uneventful months of the cold war as a payroll clerk in California. He missed the Good Conduct medal by a very wide margin. He also acquired a life-long taste for vodka. At the end of his enlistment, he and the Air Force agreed they did not meet each other's needs and went their separate ways...Expand for more
.
Ill-prepared for any gainful occupation, Ashby returned home to South Bend and enrolled in the only school with standards as low as his meager abilities--Western Michigan University. There he discovered that he was very smart. He was so smart that in 1962 he married Judith Reyniers, who, until his death, made him smile with his heart. By the anemic standards of the 21st century, he was a loving, outstanding husband for nearly 55 years.
He attended the University of Michigan where he earned a Master's degree. He received his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in 1972.
Adverse to hard labor and the outdoors, Ashby took a position at Northern Michigan University in 1969. He retired in 2000 after alienating students, faculty and administration. However, it was a job with life-time tenure, annual pay raises and a short work week. His retirement was enjoyable as well as unremarkable. There is no evidence that he made any positive contribution to society in his golden years.
He is survived by his relict, Judith Ann reynier, etc, etc. etc.
There will be no final rites or any mumbo jumbo. Part of his cremated remains will be scattered at Presque Isle in Marquette. The remainder will be mixed into clay by his friend, Marv "the mad potter" Zhender. It will be made into spoon rests for his many friends
Memorial gifts will not be accepted and cards are a waste of money. If you feel like having a double vodka, then be of good cheer. Requiescant in pace.
