JOHN's Story

Hi Everybody, I am currently living in Salem, Massachusetts working for a major defense firm. While in the Navy and since coming out of the Navy in 1983, I have traveled all over the world as a naval combat systems integration engineer. When I left the Poconos in 1977, I went to Florida on blind faith. I didn't know anybody, I just went. After several months in Florida (partying), I joined the Navy. I served six years in the Navy (two years of it on the USS Virginia CGN-38, which was a Nuclear Powered Guided Missile Cruiser). After successfully completing my enlistment (Honorable discharge received), I accepted an offer in Arlington, Virginia with a defense firm working as a Senior Engineer. I was responsible for numerous elements in the Combat Systems Weapons suite during the design and construction of the DDG-51 Arleigh Burke AEGIS Class Destroyer program. This work was providing direct engineering support to Naval Sea Systems Command. Looking back, I must admit that the combat systems training and discipline I received in the Navy paved the way for my continued career success in both the Defense industry and my academic pursuits. Academically, I have been able to complete an Associate degree, a Bachelors degree in Business Administration (with honors; Magna Cum Laude), and finally my Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Contracts and Procurement Management. Not bad for a guy who left high school after the 10th grade. Thank goodness for the GED degree program! In serving my community, I spent ten years volunteering for a local rescue squad as an Emergency Medical Technician. During my tenure with this rescue squad, I served as the squads Administration Officer, Captain, and led the Underwater Search & Recovery and Swift Water Rescue Teams. I am still a diver, but now I do it for pleasure only. I continue to serve my community when and wherever I can. It's a great feeling helping others in need, try it! My motto has and will always be; "Don't be afraid to go out on a limb, that's where the fruit is." Professional Summary: Demonstrated expertise in program management by successfully managing highly complex military combat syste...Expand for more
ms and surface combatant Naval programs for over 37 years. Demonstrated excellence in all facets of Program Leadership (both tactically & strategically) including: financial planning, domestic & international program execution, risk assessment and earned value management, systems engineering, test and evaluation, production support, fielding and direct government (customer) support. Handpicked on numerous occasions to turn around critical (Red) programs and have been successful on all. I am currently the Subcontract Program Manager for a major defense company, where I am directly responsible for the Patriot Missile System production and delivery efforts for the Warhead, Control Section Assembly, and Propulsion Section Assembly. I continue to support the Warfighter, inclusive of our NATO partners. More recently (2020), I was selected to manage and lead, as the Supplier Program Manager, a team of Engineers, Quality personnel, Material Program Managers, and Subcontract Managers who are the key stakeholders for the production and delivery of the AN/TYP-2; Antenna Enclosure Unit which is part of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) array structures, deployed around the world. This highly advanced radar system is manufactured by Raytheon (I guess you now know where I work), and is specifically designed for ballistic missile defense. This system is an Army/Navy’s Transportable Radar Surveillance which is deployed to enhance the ballistic missile defense system by adding robustness against a wide range of threats and providing support for increased protection. The AN/TPY-2 is a high-resolution, X-band, phased array radar that is transportable by air, ship, and truck. It is also deployed with a command and control interface, a radar support trailer, generators, and supply containers. Please feel free to Google this advanced radar system. In addition to my professional profile, My passion and current hobby is that I am an avid photographer and drone pilot (much cheaper then hiring a helicopter). I have a few very simple videos online (Youtube; search on my name in Salem, Massachusetts, Winter Island). More to follow ...as the journey continues....
