John's Story
I live in Linden, Michigan with my friend JoAnn along with two horses and two dogs. I have a daughter Caitlin who is 26 and married. Caitlin was born the same year that I and millions of others simultaneously thought Caitlin would be a unique name. It actually originated as a Gaelic version of Catherine, but with countless spelling variations, the nameâÂÂs cultural origin has become a lost point.
Caitlin recently completed a two year post-doctoral program at the University of Michigan where she also completed her graduate and undergraduate degrees. She just accepted her first professional position as a clinical pharmacist at the MD Anderson cancer research hospital, which is affiliated with the University of Texas in Houston.
JoAnn is retired, but I am still working and will likely continue to work for the foreseeable future.
Rodney and Vegas are our two horses. They replaced two older horses. Rodney is a large buckskin quarter-horse. He came to us when he was eight and already very well trained. He is fun to ride, but can be a challenge if he gets spooked. Vegas is the young upstart. He is half paint and half quarter-horse. He was still pretty green when he came to us and had a mouth that kept us on our toes whenever he was nearby. After three years, he has really come into his own. He is as bright as he is beautiful with a natural talent for riding.
We have two shepherds, Jesse Jane and Quinn. We got them as pups and like the horses, they replaced two older dogs. We found that it is better to keep two dogs because they keep each other company when we are not home, and they never get bored of chasing each other a...Expand for more
round the property. Jesse Jane is the perennial watch dog and a little more aggressive than necessary. In spite of professional training and numerous puppy socials, we still have to be careful with her around other dogs. Although she doesnâÂÂt look like a skinhead, she appears to have some latent Nazi tendencies. When other dogs approach, she seems to want to break into Deutschland Uber Alles, but other than that she is a great companion.
Quinn, on the other hand, has a wonderful temperament and quite a conversationalist. He is a regular romeo and even has a girlfriend whom he met on an unauthorized adventure last year. The dogâÂÂs owner is a breeder and was nearly as excited to meet Quinn as her dog. The breeder lives about a mile away in the house behind ours, and now that Quinn is dating, he has gotten quite demanding about the car and can barely contain himself in anticipation of a romantic encounter when I reach for his leash. His romantic adventures have yielded two litters. Fortunately, the breeder has more customers than necessary, and the pups have all gone to good homes.
Our pets are a gentle reminder of who is really at the top of the food chain. If you have any doubts, just consider that you will never see a cat clean up a human litter box, youâÂÂll never see a dog make its owner breakfast, and no matter how many horses you have, itâÂÂs always messier and harder to muck a barn than it is to cut the grass yourself. So if you ever encounter an incorrigible juvenile who assumes that he is endowed with infallible wisdom, just quietly hand him a pooper scooper. HeâÂÂll never comprehend the symbolism.
