John's Story
After graduating from St. Lawrence University, got my PhD (mathematics) at Brown, taught at Dartmouth, then made a career at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, for 23 years, as faculty member and chair of the department. I moved on to become executive director of the American Mathematical Society in Providence, RI, for nearly 14 years -- a great job that was a nice blend of academics and business (publishing). ith some of the best secondary math and science teachers anyone could imagine, and love the work. I've been lucky in that in all three careers.
Janice (Rusche) and I have been married for nearly 49 years, with three children and 6 grandchildren, all out west at the moment (alas). We've lived for periods of time (a year or more) in Denmark, Germany, and England -- one of the benefits of being a mathematician -- and we've lived in small towns as well as large cities. A good life for us both. Janice is a retired optometrist, who now has turned to quilting (in a big way). Eventually, I'll retire ... but not quite yet.
