John's Story

UC Berkeley - German, Old English CSU Stanislaus - Middle English, German University of Heidelberg - Latin, Ancient Greek, Old High German, Middle High German, Gothic United States Navy - Naval Intelligence, Portuguese language--Retired in 1994 Latin and German Teacher 1994-2007 tlhIngan jIH United States Army ROTC Contractor in Culture and Language Programs 2007 to present. Bob: I am still awaiting your move in Blitzkrieg. Married 35 years to Gayle (Davis High 1969) 2 daughters, one married to a Navy guy who drives small boats at high speeds and shoots every weapon known to western man (and the Navy pays him to do it!); younger daughter in the United States Air Force undergoing officer training. As they say in Frankfurt, "Ende gut, alles Goethe!" Or, perhaps to paraphrase Hartmann von Aue: "Ein ritter so gelaeret was, daz er an den buochen laz, swaz er darin geschriben vant..." gnothi seauton! Was bedeutet das? Ich weiss nicht. Das ist Griechisch. (from the Asterix Buecher). Actually I do know what it means... And yes, I have seen the Hermannsdenkmal near the Teutobergerwald...even if it is 60km away from the site of the Roman defeat in 9 AD...die spinnen, die Roemer...Wish we had umlauts...oh, we do but wae may not use them...and there is a difference between "durfte" and "duerfte," by the way... And the near-now is quite definitely near the now, but as the years pass, dark energy is causing the separation between the now and the near-now to expand...in a trillion years or so, they won't even be in the same visible universe, let alone close to each other, if they can survive proton decay, that is. But think how much easier geometry will be...the Geometry of a Nine-Point Universe (it was a class at Berkeley) will be eight points too many, and point will equal ray will equal line will equal plane (indeed, Herve will be able to say, "De point, de line," and mean the same--assuming reincarnation, of course). And the Medieval Church finally will be provably correct, too. With only one point in the universe, it will be the only place possible for three hundred million angels to dance. Of...Expand for more
course, they won't be able to square dance, because that would take at least four points, or at least three other visible universes would have to be amalgamated...and imagine do-si-doing through several universes--heck they would meet themselves both coming and going. But the geometry would be so easy, Euclid would be renamed to "Euwww." And calculus would be absurdly easy. With only one point to work with, all lengths are the same, but their squares would always be as close to zero as the near-now is to the n...heck, their squares, though smaller than their lengths, would always be in another universe, and trignometry functions would always equal zero. The Law of Sines would result in zero, or the answer would be out of this world. And with no measurements possible on a single point, time would zeroize as well...so the Sines of the Times would be a big fat zilch also. So let's hear it for Dark Energy! And yes, there is a crater on the moon named "Beer" as a real name. As you look at the Spitsbergen Montes, it is to the left side, and down somewhat. However, it is not named for beer at all, instead it is named for Beer. Just thought you would want to know. All places on the Moon and Mars have official names in Latin, according to international treaty...so how does the JPL get off naming some places in English? Humph...we should call one of the places on Mars Observatorio Caroli Saganis... Anyone else catch the pun in Sir Kay's name in the Arthurian legends? Of course, it would presuppose some of those Irish trained Welsh monks knew a little Greek. Cai, da mihi ensem meum. In Greek, Kai means "and" so Arthur, using the second person command, would be referring to his foster brother in way that works out as, "And (being always second to me), (you) give me my sword." Arthur's constant hot needle, no? It seems very similar to other, deeper meanings of "Quasimodo" by Dumas. De profundis... Nunc est indormiendum (est media noctis hic in provincia Virginia, ubi non in taberna sumus); malo, autem, dicere: bibamus et cantemus! Et sicut angeli saltemus omnes (in universo multum parvulo)!
