John's Story

I see lots of names of people I knew and even liked during HS popping up these days on Classmates. So here is a quick update for the few who are interested: --Still living in Colorado --Married to the same wonderful, accomplished, intelligent, strong woman for more than 36years --Two great kids, grown and exploring life, one grandchild on the way. --My mom is with us, close to my children, playing bridge and poker with her pals several days a week, ready for any political argument, lives independently and drives herself wherever she needs to go. She is over-the-top about a great grandchild. Her friends from the Lubbock days are now largely gone. The reality of being in her mid-90s. --I "retired" a few years ago thanks to the largesse of the REMARKABLE financial services corporation I worked for in the final decades of my career. Still love the news business and count many friends there as my closest associates. --Now consulting to the industry from which I retired, which keeps me as busy as I want to be. --Volunteering on a couple of great causes and continue to work on political issues. --Spend my "spare" time runn...Expand for more
ing Colorado's Forest Service roads in my truck, or scaring the hell out of myself and a few deer in my sports car while driving paved mountain roads, working on our 1890s-era home, or maintaining our mountain home. --Remain close friends with some current and former Lubbock folks including Mike Leach (who returned with his wife to The Hub City to look after his mom who had now passed on), Greg Luger (who will never return to Lubbock to live though we returned to honor his dad on his 90th b'day), Dennis Holland (Coronado HS; recently featured in a Metropolitan Museum of NY exhibit of his world-class ivory carving). There is a big world out there full of thoughtful, fun, accomplished characters, each with a story, a past and a future. I enjoy people and their unique experiences. Visiting Lubbbock is like a trip back in a time machine. Tom and Bingo's could be a scene in a mid-60s movie. The old neighborhoods aged well. TT remains as bizarre as ever (Bobby Knight? Alberto Gonzales?) And the Buddy Holly Museum is a long-needed, somewhat ignored asset to the town, as is the Arts District. I'm on FB. Shoot me a note!
