John's Story
I am currently a judge in the federal court system. I describe my current position as "the greatest job in the United States of America." I was a partner and trial lawyer for 30 years in the law firm of West and Jones, Clarksburg WV prior to my appointment to the Court. In 1989 I was elected and served as President of the West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
For several years after graduation from law school, along with two other men, I coached and ran a pee wee wrestling team that ultimately helped produce two high school state champion wrestlers.
I am married with one child. My wife is a senior analyst with a large international pharmaceutical testing company. My daughter is the Vice President in charge of News Operations and evening statewide news anchor of a holding company comprised of 4 television stations and one weekley business news journal.
I am President of Allohak Council BSA which operates Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venture Crew programs and two camps from Athens, Ohio to Parsons, WV.
I have served as a ruling elder in a local Presbyterian Church, and was a former chair and director of Fort New Salem Foundation (dedicated to the preservation of the living history of the 1800's mountain people of Western Virginia, now West Virginia). In the past I have served as President of the Flemington Lions Club and chair of the committee to design, fund, construct and dedicate a permanent memorial to those from Eastern Taylor County, WV who served our country in the armed forcesfrom WWI to Gulf 1 (Desert Storm). I have also served on the boards of the WV Horseman's Association, the WV Bowhunter's Association and the Miss WV Scholarship Pageant Association. Currently I am chair of the committee to design, construct and present the West Virginia Tent Exhibit at the 1st National Boy Scout Jamboree to be held at the Summit High Adventure Base Camp in the New River Go...Expand for more
rge of WV in 2013.
Past hobbies have included: training and showing walking horses, motorcycle riding, archery and firearm hunting, competitive target archery, back packing, whitewatering, sailing, water skiing, snow skiing.
With age and wear and tear on the body, I still enjoy sailing and the comaraderie of hunting, but have given up the other hobbies and sports for power walking, woodworking, photography, travel and reading/writing.
I have had a number of pets (inside and outside and barn cats, dogs, horses, freshwater tropical fish, and horses). I lost my last pet-the "Giggle" puppy in 2008. Two years before that, I lost my last barn kitty, "Beaner". Since movies like "Old Yeller" and "Marley and Me" cause me great pain, I waited a couple of years before having another pet. The joy a pet brings outweighs the pain of its ultimate loss. In November 2010 my wife and I rescured a party colored mini-schnauzer from Celina Ohio. She turned one year old on May 29, 2011. Now I enjoy her as well as the pets nature so abundantly provides where I am blessed to live: deer, wild turkey, birds, racoons, and squirrels (facebook album).
I joined this site to reconnect with those with whom I went to school. If you have stories of things we did together or you remember about me, feel free to share them with me. I would like to preserve some of our childhood stories for my adult child to savor and enjoy. However, some of the stories may be like the Nixon tapes, not disclosed until many years after all of those involved are long gone.
One thing I have noted, many of the SP class of '64 have spread far from home and have had interesting and dedicated lives. I think the teachers of SP would be proud of the class of '64 and what it did.
Like most of the class of '64, the last 1/3 of my life's story has yet to be written. There is much yet to do before the lights are turned out.
