John's Story

Life Now that I've ended my volunteer work as a volunteer court-appointed special advocate for inner-city kids, I've been spending more time at my mountain hideout in Loudoun County near Harpers Ferry building a replica of my favorite Japanese garden in Kyoto (see photos, which show the progress on the moss garden and waterfall I'm building by hand next to the outdoor spa. Although only half complete, I must say that the moss garden and prospective waterfall really add to the serene Japanese setting of the spa.). I'm also spending more time these days with my grandson, who is now in the 10th grade at Wilson HS and drops by the house every day after school. Both of my kids live within five blocks of my city home on Butterworth Place in AU Park. It's a pretty nice set up. Just like a rural village. His folks and I were just working this weekend converting the barn I built next to the cabin into a bunkhouse for my grandson and his friends, as well as for our visitors. The cabin is a great spot for kids and adults. The completely private spring-fed crystal-clear lake is stocked with bass and blue gills and the swimming is fantastic. We just ha...Expand for more
d a party there for about 30 of our foreign-service pals from our days in Japan. Great fun. I'm not going to join this site, so don't expect me to see any notes or signatures you leave here. I'm in the DC phone book, on Butterworth Place NW. Call me if you want to talk or send me a note as jaqkelley on Yahoo. Workplace I spent 32 years as a political and Japanese-language officer in the Foreign Service, primarily in Northeast Asia and the Pacific (Japan, Korea, Australia, Hawaii) with some time off in Europe (Portugal) for good behavior. I speak Japanese and Portuguese fluently, and can manage in Korean and Australian. My last overseas job was as Political Counselor in the US Embassy in Canberra. I now keep up in foreign affairs through memberships in several foreign affairs-related professional associations. Otherwise, I don't spend much time on my old pastimes, though I do keep up with many of my pals from those days through the various organizations I belong to. I'm enjoying life. Every phase so far has been better than I expected, even though I keep raising my expectations. I'd say more, but you never know who's reading this stuff.
