Captain Lea reported for duty in July 2009 as the Force Chaplain assigned to Commander, Navy Installations Command, headquartered in Washington, DC.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Nov. 26, 1957, Captain Lea graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., in 1980. In 1983, he graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., with a Master of Divinity degree.
Captain Lea is an ordained Deacon and Elder of the United Methodist Church. He was appointed pastor to St. PaulÂs United Methodist Church in Port Republic, N.J., in 1983. He served there as pastor until accepting his commission into the United States Naval Reserve in June 1986 with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.
After completing Naval Chaplains School at Naval Education Training Center Newport, R.I., in August 1986, he was assigned to Naval Air Station Memphis in Millington, Tenn. He served as staff chaplain assigned to the base chapel and to the mechanical schools of Naval Air Technical Training Center.
From 1989 to 1992 Captain Lea was assigned to duty in USS SOUTH CAROLINA (CGN 37) home ported in Norfolk, Va., as the Command Chaplain.

N.C., from 1992 to 1994 as Assistant Group Chaplain. He was subsequently assigned to the Navy Chief of Chaplains Office in Washington, D.C., as the Facilities Branch Head where he served until 1997.
Next, Captain Lea served at Headquarters Marine Corps in the Manpower and Reserve Affairs Department. During this tour, he earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma, in Norman, Okla. His billet was moved to Marine Corps Recruiting Command in April 1999 where he served until 2001.
From 2001 to 2004 Captain Lea served as Deputy Force Chaplain at United States Marine Corps Forces, Atlantic in Norfolk, Va. During this time he also spent six months on temporary additional duty assignment with the Combined Joint Task Force  Horn of Africa, Djibouti East Africa as the Task Force Chaplain.
Following temporary duty in Djibouti, Captain Lea was assigned as the Group Chaplain at Amphibious Group Two in Norfolk, Va. until detaching in September 2006.
In October 2006 he reported for duty as the Force Chaplain assigned to Commander, Naval Forces Japan in Yokosuka, Japan detaching in June 2009.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
