John's Story

My life changed this week---my wife, partner, friend of 27 years lost her battle with cancer Friday, April 16, 2010. Was known as shy, scared of girls while in high school--sort of on the nerd side. Joined the Air Force after high school. Married, devorced, and remarried for the past 27 happy years. Started life after HS (1960) in Arkansas. Moved to Calfornia in '76. In the early '80's the job (telephone engineer) took me to Texas and New Mexico. Met my wife, Lennis, while at an International Toastmasters convention in Phoenix, Az. Moved to Anaheim, CA ... changed professions started working for Hughes Aircraft in '82. Moved to San Bernardino Mountains in '86 ... sold real estate. Quit work and started building Spanish (classical) acoustic guitars in '91 ... also electric guitars and bass. Another move took us to the High Desert of California (Victorville area) in '96. There I was a freelance writer for local newspaper... seven and a half years with a weekly bowling column along with scores of misc business related articles (called, appropriately enough, business spotlights). Also did alot of bowling over the past 20 years ... leagues and tournaments ... high points include seven 300 games along with six 800 series ... became USBC certi...Expand for more
fied bowling coach in 1996. Our most recent move (in 2005) brought us to Lincoln City,OR. where we are enjoying coastal living. Took up a couple other hobbies ... wood carving, playing poker and tai chi---still bowl once a week. Wife was into water color. Unfortunately, most of her hours, after five years of chemo, was spent preparing for the final stage of cancer. We laughed and cried a lot. And her fight ended April 16, 2010. We are trained Whale Watchers and have "adopted" a mile of Oregon coastline (We make a quarterly report on the condition and use [or mis-use] of "our mile"). Retired life is rough! Retired? I just thought so. In October 2009 I opened the Knothole Lutherie Shop in Lincoln City, Oregon and started building guitars again after a nearly five year layoff. Not one to shy away from a challenge, I'm currently building 22 Spanish style nylon string guitars at (sort of) one time. Check out my progress at mcclouddesigns.blogspot.com My relaxation comes by getting into a session of qigong. Met a lady in Eugene Oregon in 2012 ... moved to Eugene and got married in 2013. My shop is now in the "bonus" room of our home. Building is sporadic but still constant in my life..next a resonator guitar and perhaps a Ukulele or two.
