John's Story

Life I spent twenty-one years in the U.S. Army (SHOCK!) and once retired remained in Germany, where I served as a college administrator for a U.S. university in Europe. In 1994 I returned to the U.S. and taught high school in South Florida for a couple of years before I went into school administration. Since 1999, I have been Superintendent of a small school district in eastern North Carolina. I have remained active in sports and was a seven-time All-Army athlete during my time in the military. I represented both the U.S. and Germany in international competition throughout the world and have won three world championships in throwing. I still compete in age group competition on an international basis. I competed in the World Bench Press Championships in Las Vegas in December 2003. It has always been my goal to achieve "Renaissance Man" status and I think I've done a pretty good job of achieving that goal. I'm not "rich," but I'm making more money that I ever thought I would. I don't think my teachers at BHS even remotely recognized my intellectual potential. I have tried to emulate those teachers who have, throughout my life, taught me well and mentored me and avoided emulating the behavior of those who didn't have their "act" together. I have had a wonderful life and when I look back I realize that my time at BHS was just the jump-off point for future success in life. My wife is Austrian and I have two sons, one 32, the other 24 and three grandchilden, one grandson, age 11 and two granddaughters, 3 and 5 years old, respectively. My youngest son is 6'9" tall (he makes me feel like a midget at 6'4 1/2"). This may not be my "final resting place" as I may be departing in a year or two to a new job challenge. School I left Oregon State University after a year (too wet), attended Valley College for a year and eventually graduated from Pittsburg State University, a teacher's college in Kansas. Later, while in the Army, I received my first Masters in Counseling Psychology from a state college in Maryland and my second Masters, in Man...Expand for more
agement, from Webster University in St. Louis, MO. While teaching at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), I went to Fordham University in NY and earned my doctorate in Educational Administration & Supervision in 1990. I started a third Masters Program (in Sports Management) but quit when I saw it was "overkill." Workplace I completed a twenty-one year career as a military Officer (U.S. Army, Military Police/Military Intelligence) in 1993. I earned my doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision at Fordham University while teaching at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, and later did teaching and administrative work at both the college and high school levels. I have two earned Masters Degrees, one in Counseling Psychology, the other in Management. I now serve as Superintendent of Schools for a small school district in eastern North Carolina. I have traveled extensively, to Australia, Africa and Western and Eastern Europe, either as a result of my job or via. I don't know if you remember Mrs. Anderson, a 12th grade English teacher at BHS in 1966, but she once remarked to me "you'll never make anything out of yourself." I have done my best to prove her wrong! It is good I was/am a competitive person or her comments could have "destroyed" me. In my opinion, teachers are some of the most important people in the world. Military I went into the Army in 1972 as a Private, was promoted to Warrant Officer and eventually received a direct commission to First Lieutenant. I retired as a Major. While on active duty I served at Ft. Bliss, TX, Kaiserslautern, Germany, Ft. Meade, MD, the Army Crime Records Center in Baltimore, MD, Ft. Riley, KS, Ft. Jackson, SC, the U.S. Military Academy, Ft. Ritchie, MD and at the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division Command HQS near Heidelberg, Germany. My military background was in both Military Police and Military Intelligence and I dealt with counterrrorism while in the service. One of my assignments involved providing security for both President Bush and President Clinton.
