John's Story

Life '77 was a long time ago. What have I been up to since then? Well... After working in Surgery at Suburban Hospital from 77-83 (Mell Sales helped get me that job) I joined the Navy; became a Medical Laboratory technician; became stationed on the USS Iowa, Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Bethesda Maryland; got married and transfered to South Carolina. Got divorced (no kids thank God), remarried 2 years later to a much better person, then moved to Lexington (was out of the Navy then) where my brother and I were in the HVAC business together. The HVAC business didn't work out, so with the help of Butch Vertrees (ran into him at Wal-Mart, there in Lex.) I started working with him at Koorsen Protection. After a few months of struggling with all the bills, my wife, Allison, talked me into going back into the Navy where we then went to San Diego for a new Navy job as an Independent Duty Hospital Corpsman (sort of like a Physicians Assistant job where among other things physically examined patients and wrote prescriptions). Then began my career with the USMC stationed in Okinawa, Japan for 3 yrs, moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and was stationed at NASA's Wallops Island Flight Facility near Chincoteague, VA working independently while my boss was located 140 miles away at The Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD (another 3 yrs). 9-11 happened while there. The Navy responded with creating special Mobile Security Groups (highly-mobile, 3 small boat units fitt...Expand for more
ed to the gills with weapons like .50 cal machine guns, MK-19 grenade launchers, 240's and underwater anti-personnel measures) to which I transfered to and was stationed out of Portsmouth, VA (across the Elizabeth River from Norfolk). After doing that a few yrs it was time to retire from tha Navy. I then wanted to enroll into the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Surgical PA School before coming back to Louisville. In my search for PA schools, I discovered that Norfolk had a Medical School (Eastern Virginia Med School) that offered a Surgical Assistant program. I applied and was accepted in '04, graduated in July '06 with Honors 3.98 (which is quite an improvement over what I did at Moore). The closest job op which sounded best was in Cincinnati. And that's where we are now, working in Surgery as the 3rd and 4th hands of different Surgeons at The Christ Hospital in downtown Cincinnati (rated #9? in US News and World Report). I do come to Louisville every so often. Married almost 15 yrs to Allison. 2 boys and 1 girl ages 13, 8, and 4 in that order. I've been in contact throughout the years with Christi Downs (Antes) and Mimi Anson. In fact, Christi turned me onto this site. I can be reached via email at jacksaunders2 at aol (don't let the "jack" fool you, a nickname given to me while in the Navy) or at 513-231-1693. I'd love to hear from any of my old friends. I'll be adding pics in the future, so check back in a few weeks. See Ya, John
