John's Story
A lot has changed since our days at Northgate (coming up on 30 years ago). Are we really getting that old, I still feel young at least. Lets see, I left Northgate and California. Moved to a suburb of Chicago where I went to school at Concordia College, graduating with a double major English & Psychology and a business minor. I married a girl I met in college and settled down on the far south side of Chicago in a little town called Crete. I worked in middle management customer service for the next 15 years. My wife and I have two incredible daughters, Chandler (19 & a freshman in college at Augustana) and our youngest, Kendyl (16 & a sophomore in high school, playing volleyball year round). My girls are amazing. My oldest received an academic scholarship to college majoring in Pre-Vet. She actually finished high school with a 4.6 GPA (must have gotten that from her mother). My youngest is also a very good student and as I stated earlier, plays volleyball year round (5'10" and made Varsity this year and took fourth in the state of Illinois).
Getting back to what's happened to me... Well, after 15 years of management, two daughters, and a wife who ...Expand for more
was making far more than I possibly could, I became a stay at home dad. You know, cooking, cleaning, homework, well you get the idea. I then began to take care of my younger nephew and niece as my brother-in-law needed help with the kids as a single parent and his own business. So house-dad continues. Right up until about 3 months ago.
Getting a divorce and changing just about everything in my life. I have relocated to Irvine in southern California, beginning a new career, being a father to older girls from another state, and trying to re-invent myself. One thing that has remained constant is coaching volleyball. I have been coaching now for the past 8-9 years. Everything from 5th grade girls to 7th & 8th grade boys, and then men's sophomores. I have just recently taken a job with a club in southern California called T street volleyball which is run by an amazing man who played collegicaly, then went on to win gold in the Olympics, coached BYU to two national championships and then coached Misty Mae and Kerry Walsh in the Beijing games. He is teaching me more than I could have ever thought possible, as I felt I had already known the game well.
