John's Story

After finishing a BS in Chemistry from Loras, I got a PhD in Biochemical Sciences from Princeton University. I studied Neuroscience as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California at San Francisco. I got my first academic job at Harvard Medical School and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 1980 and moved to the Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan in 1991. I continue to teach and do research in developmental neurobiology and neuro-immunology. My partner, Lorraine Gudas, and I have a son who works at Morgan Stanley and lives on the west side. Lorraine is the Chair of Pharmacology at Weill Cornell. She teaches and studies vitamin A, cancer biology, and developmental biology. We live on the east side and bike to work. We both enjoy plays, museums, and music around the city. We love the city’s parks and restaurants. We like to bike in upstate NY, NJ, and PA. We visit Lorraine’s home in Syracuse every month or two where we bike on the...Expand for more
Erie Canal and swim in the Finger Lakes. I make it back to Dubuque almost every year to visit family and friends. Lorraine and I ski, swim, lift weights, hike, and go white water rafting, when we can. We make it to our favorite beaches in Rhode Island and Long Island a few times each year. I play bogie golf and study my family history (Wagner, Trentz, Jaeger, Rhomberg, Van Duelman, and Kunnert families (among others)). Philosophy is still a hobby, and I am active in the Secular humanist Society of NY, the Center for Inquiry, and the FFRF. I have fond memories of debate team, biology club, chemistry class, Schola, basket ball games, football, being a lifeguard at Flora Pool, working at the YMCA, visiting Eagle Point & Julian Dubuque Parks…. I would love to hear how my classmates are doing and you can contact me on facebook or through my E-mail at Weill Cornell. If you find yourself in Manhattan, perhaps we can go to a play or tour a museum together.
