Johnny's Story

Life My wife Alyssa is a hottie...we've got three kids and keep practicing for another. I live in Columbia,SC and still in the Navy. I conduct the computerized ASVAB test to people who want to come into any branch of the military. I will retire in a little over a year from now. You can contact me by E mailing me at "j o h n n y t h o r n l e y at y a h o o dot c o m" but take out all those spaces of course. Military I've been in every major and minor conflict since Aug of '89 with the exception of Panama and Somalia. I've been on 8 different combat ships for no less than six months at a time. Wanna know what it's like... lock yourself in your house for 6 months, take only cold showers, plan an eating schedule to be the same for the same day of the week every week, eat only chicken or roast beef for the main meals, make sure the food is cold and that the only readily available condiments are salt...pepper...hot sauce, turn off the cable tv, watch only the movies that you have readily available for 6 months, open your mail 30 days after you actually receive it to simulate the receiving time you'd get it out at sea, when you see someone...curse them and throu things at them(great stress reliever), when your clothes are halfway through the wash cycle...throw them in the drier for 30 minutes...then take them out while they're still damp to simulate ships laundry, drink powdered milk or goats milk...you don't get real milk on the ship, abstain from sex except with yourself, only use the phone once a month for 20 minutes and that folks...is pretty close to what life is like being deployed when you're on a ship. If you're not on a ship...be very wary your life is in danger of being taken at a whims notice and the government could care less unless they were to get bad publicity over it. Your medical care is like being treated at the free clinic. Even your dependents get this great t...Expand for more
reatment. All due to the fact that Tricare insurance pays less than Medicare. So your dependents better feel lucky that there's any medical provider that accepts Tricare coverage. Your dependents have a list of Tricare providers that they can use...trust me, they're not top of the line most of the time but qualified if that matters of course. Now lets talk about retirement. At 20 years of service you are eligible to retire using the high 3 method...the average of the highest three years paid of your military service. Most notably it would probably be your last three years of service provided you weren't busted down a rank or two. It's approximately 50% of your base pay. Now lets talk about pay. Base pay is only 1 pay. When you're active duty you get paid three different pays. Base Pay, Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), Basic Allowance for Substanance (BAS or known as food allowance in lymans terms) and then you have the once a year $200-450 clothing allowance. Base pay for an E-6 whom is ready to retire is $3064.50, BAH varies by region but is on average about $1100, BAS is $279.88. By the time all the retirement calculations are done. Remember, it doesn't matter how much you're making now. It matters what was the highest amount of base pay you made for three years and you receive that average. Right now... an E-6 with the above figures I quoted would retire with only $1532 a month before taxes after 20 years of service with our country. You will not receive free medical and dental care. You will have to pay over $100 a month for retired family dental care and over $35 a month for family medical care. Your life insurance can be transferred and kept for a nominally higher fee of about $7-15 more a month than what is paid during active duty and is a bargain. Now there's VA benefits but I won't go into that yet because I haven't had the luxury of experiencing it yet. Wish me luck!!
